DF macros were a little slow here, so I once again used AutoHotKey to help speed things up !

Isn't there a Macro Delay in the init?  I think it's defaulted to 50 or 5, set it down to 0 should help.

Ok !

I made some Bard training Science ! Here are my results. Be informed, this is colourful.

There are 11 "bard" skills :
Musical : Dance, Music, Key instrument, Percussion instrument, String instrument, and Wind instrument.
Spoken : Singing and Speaking.
Writen : Poetry, Wordsmith (labelled as "writing" on DT), Writer (labelled as "prose" on DT)


From the "x" menu, you can :
   Compose a Poem :
      Poetry +50
      WordSmith +12
   Compose a Musical Composition :
      Music +50
   Compose a Choreography :
      Dance +50
   Write :
      Anything from "Guide" to "Atlas" :
         Writer +50
         WordSmith +12
      Poem :
         Poetry +50
         WordSmith +12
      Musical Composition :
         Music +50
      Choreography :
         Dance +50
      Copy of Existing Book :
         Nothing
      

From the "begin a performance" menu, you can :
   Tell a story :
      Speaker +1 per step
   Recite a poem :
      Speaker +1 per step
      There are no poet skill gain !
   Dance :
      Dancer +1 per step
   Perform Music :
      Chant / Sing / Simulate :
         Music +1 per step
         Singer +1 per step
      Play an instrument :
         Music +1 per step
         Instrument +1 per step

So, let's analyze the numbers !
Korgoth has Great Writer. That is 11k.
He also has Proficient Wordsmith. This is 3,5k.

Writer :
Korgoth has 11k. So he needs 7k, which is 140 (= 7000 / 50) scrolls to write on.

WordSmith :
There is an overflow from Writer.
The overflow on WordSmith is 140 x 12 = 1680 for a total of 5180 (3,5k + 1680) exp after having written 140 scrolls.
So, we have 12820 exp remaining. We need to get them from composing poems.
Math indicates that we must compose 1069 poems before reaching legendary WordSmith.

Poetry :
Composing 1069 poems grants a Legendary + 13 in Poetry !!! A bit overkill it seems :-[

Dance :
Composing 360 Choreographies will do it. Or maybe dancing will do. I will test them both and pick the fastest.

Instruments :
Need to do this 4 times. One for each instrument. I think macros will be useful once again :P

Speaker :
Just speaking. Nothing too tricky, but I must wait 18.000 steps o_O

Singer :
Just singing. Same as above.

Music :
Will be done automatically. This is the Fighter skill of bards. Korgoth should reach 90.000 exp (4 x Instruments + Singer). This will be Legendary + 23.
This will be fun !

Finally, blame me !
I really should have started as a Great WordSmith and dabbling Writer !
By doing so, I could have created 360 Choreographies, Books and Poems, and would have legendary WordSmith in 1080 "x actions" rather than 1569...

Fascinating. Any attribute boosts? I doubt there are since people would probably notice tavern idlers maxing them out, but worth to ask.

On Dancing: From your own viewpoint, if you can manage 18k step routine for one skill, it might be easier to adapt to that instead of finding 360 new writing materials.

Log 5 - Let there be music !

I anticipated it. Bard skills are a pain to train !

In case you didn't see my last post, I showed that the Speaker, Singer and the 4 Instruments skills were trained 1 exp per step.
Now, this is very, very, very slow.

It is even slower to train them, because unlike crutch-walker, the action to train is :
"k, {begin performance}, {perform music}, {music name}, {instrument name}, ., . "
This lenghty key-sequence makes you play one song for 2 steps. So it is 2 exp only !!

Let's go for some (more) facts :
- Every music Korgoth knows (so I guess every music in the world) is a two steps music. So one music trains 2 exp.
- Every story Korgoth knows is a ten steps story. So one story trains 10 exp.

Obviously then, training instruments/singer is more challenging.


Now, there are several problems you must solve :
  • Problem number one are bogeymen. You don't want to train outside.
  • Next problem is the Focused word. You must be Focused to gain skill. And reciting the same words hundreds of time bores your adventurer.
    To gain focus, I usually craft objects, drink alcohol, wear items, have an argument or speak (last two needing someone to speak to). So Korgoth cannot be alone.
  • Drink and eat and sleep.
    Korgoth will be drowsy/hungry/thirsty a lot. That's ridiculous. Queueing a 1000 loop macro is a bad idea.
    The drowsy trait makes it so you cannot train in a lair, because you can't sleep in these.
  • Training is only done when you make a step, by pressing "."
    The problem is that during this step, AI occurs. So you don't know how laggy the game can become.
    So, you must implement lag (sleep) in your macros.

To solve all these problems, I ended up building a camp near a water source for better efficiency.
I setled there with some companions. If i get unfocused, I talk to them or whatever, and resume training.

I started training wind instrument a little, not too much though, I stopped at Skilled, which is 4/15.

At first, I played instruments in the wilderness, if bogeymen appeared, I just destroyed them easily.
But eventualy, it came a time where Korgoth lost focus because he wanted to drink.
So I gave him alcohol, but he got poisoned before sunset (dizzy !!). The same night, bogeymen came and the dizzyness was no good !
Completely drunk, Korgoth got beat up quite some, and lost a teeth :(

This is why I moved on to building a camp and hiring companions ^^
So I built a camp, took some drunk dorfs as companions, and spoke stories for days.
Always the same story about the scouting of one of my RIP former companions.

Korgoth spoke these words thousands of times, always the same words, and mastered Speaker.
This was really slow, and took me the whole week-end. Not full time though, I started a few macro 500 exp sequences here and there (500 exp is the max I can do before loosing focus), then slept/ate/drank, then regained focus and did it again.

You might want to get Korgoth into that fortress, finish up the rest of the skills, and come back to instruments later.

Hi everyone ! Here goes some news !

Bards skills are still undergoing. I almost finished wind instrument, it is a 12/15 now. This is slow, as expected, but not too bad once you've found a good pace.
The hardest thing is to find time IRL, because I'm quite busy at home.
With Speaker done btw, I realized Korgoth has mastered 25% of the skills :) Progress is being made !

When wind is done, this will be 20% of the slow bard skills done (the other being key, percussion, string and singer).
After that, Dancer and Poet will be pretty quick !

I don't have enough books to train Writer all the way, so I will need to retire and create a fortress to produce more scrolls.
So Writer will probably be done after. Also, since I haven't found any dwarven string or percussion instruments, I can't train these skills. I will probably wait fort fortress mode for these too.


Last but not least :
Korgoth is bleeding !
During my training, I noticed that sometimes, he is "Faint" ! With no apparent good reason.
I sleep, eat, drink, and start training. After some 500 steps or so, he sometimes has "moderate blood loss". The training is done in the grass, inside. I can't find any consistent explaination of this, as it seems to happen regarless of him being drowsy or anything.

I don't really know what causes it. Any ideas ? Should I worry ?
Maybe it is some critters, I'm in a jungle... Maybe the infections are starting to kill him ?
Help is welcome :)

The last one, I think.

I once had a baby survive one strike in communal danger room (3 red wounds), and they alternatively switched between normal, pale and faint for over a season or so before dying, with the game reporting them as dead from infection.
RIP baby who never got any medical care because the mother didn't allow it.

I could do that :P
But Korgoth has some 20ish bone rings he crafted himself on each thumbs/toes.
All of these are at least exceptionnal quality, the other masterpieces.
Some are ¤Elephant bone ring¤ (creature value modifier of x5), others are at least x2.
On average, one ring is like 300 DB, so I would say one thumb is worth at the very least 6000 DB.
Not a good idea to remove so much wealth from Armok's chosen one.

Take them off and put them in your backpack first. Korgoth is LITERALLY DYING.
