Magical Burst

Yumachi City is one of the largest and most advanced cities in Japan, a symbol of the modern world. There are many things there; it has several great schools, it has some of the best shopping in the country, job opportunities, and more. With a city such as this, it comes as little surprise that not everything is as it seems...

But of course, such matters are of little concern to average high school students. You are all students at Tochiya High School, which is quite a good one as far as public school goes, and one with many sorts of people. Life is simple, and that’s fine. But it won’t be for long, now...


SO. A game using the Magical Burst system. I’d call it a Magical Girl game but since I’m allowing male characters… anyway, we’re using the following rulebook. It’s free and online, so availability is not an issue.

Reference sheets. Magical talents, basic moves, etc.

With that out of the way, let’s get into characters, shall we? You’re all students at Tochiya High School in the fictional Yumachi City. It should be obvious that your characters will become Magical Girls/Boys shortly after we start, so keep that in mind. Beyond that, try to keep things within reason, and run backstories by me first.

As for the city itself, we’re using a suggestion from the rulebook: Players can determine things about the city, within reason. Keep in mind that it’s a pretty modernized city, with dense urban areas and tall buildings and such. It’s a big place, so coming up with places will usually not be an issue.

Start: The rulebook assumes that characters have already become magical girls/boys at the start of the game. I find it weird that we’d have six magic people who just so happened to know each other and just so happened to become magical at the same time (in terms of progression, that is), so the first “Episode” will be the one where you all gain powers.

Fallouts:

Fallouts will usually be rolled, unless there is a specific one that the GM thinks would be appropriate for the situation. The player who is ridding their character of Overcharge may suggest a specific Fallout that they think may be fun to use, but it is still ultimately at the GM’s discretion.

When someone gets a Temporary Change for whatever reason, I will roll on the table for it. When someone gets a Permanent Change, however, I will hand pick it as something I find appropriate. If such a Change might induce a radical change in the character, the player will be PM’d about it beforehand, and if they are not comfortable with it then they will be given a list of Changes to pick one from.

Crises: Crises will not necessarily have all happened at the beginning of the first episode, since you’re not magical girls yet and it makes a lot of stuff just happen early on and that seems rather chaotic. Therefore, crises are optional; trauma isn’t what makes one a Magical Girl, after all. If you have an idea for what happened to your character before the start or something that will happen later on, PM it.

Male Characters: They’re allowed. They’re Magical Boys. Not much else to say.

HP: Every “Episode” completed gives characters a +1 to base Resolve.

Sheet:
Just a note: In the fourth rulebook, there are several tables you can roll on for nearly all attributes if you wish, but you do not need to do this. Character creation will mostly follow the rulebook, with differences that should be obvious on the sheet.

Name: Duh.
Magical Girl/Boy Name, if you have one: If you have one, the character gave it to themselves.

Gender: What you identify as.
Sex: What's in your pants.

Age: Between 15-17.

Appearance: What do you look like? Try to keep it to somewhat realistic hair and eye colors, but dyes and color contacts certainly exist. Feel free to use a picture.

Magical Appearance: Same as above, but for your magical girl/boy form. This is not necessarily the same as your normal form- perhaps you look older or younger, or maybe you have an unnatural hair or eye color in this form-, but is most likely recognizable. Ditto on the pictures.

Description: Personality and such.

Background: If you want to share with other players. If you don’t, PM me. This is required; In addition to general information, this is where you answer the questions from the book. Those are:

“What kind of person are you?”

“What reason will you have to make a pact?”

“What will your wish be when you get it?”

There are examples of all of these in the rulebook. Feel free to use them or create your own.

You should at least put what other people at the school would know about you.

And let's just get this out of the way; if your character is the sort who wouldn’t contract no matter what, you’re not getting in. While I could deal with having one non magic character, that’s taking a spot away from someone who will actually be playing and that’s not fair.

Magical Power: What’s your unique power? This is not necessarily a combat power, and will most likely have no mechanical representation. Confirm with me first. There’s a table for this you can look at for ideas. No “Time Jump” or anything like that.

Magical Element: What element do you manipulate? There are tables for this in the rulebook that you could roll on, or you could pick from, or just make up your own if it’s not on the table. Confirm with me first. This does not affect damage, just certain Fallouts and Changes.

Magical Weapon: From your standard swords and staves to magic-enhanced firearms to hitting them with a desk, a Magical Girl or Boy can have many sorts of weapons. What’s yours? This is mostly fluff, for how to describe your attacks.

When making a magical challenge, you can take 1 Overcharge on the magical attribute you’re using for the challenge to roll an additional die and add it to your result. This die will give you another die and another point of Overcharge if it rolls a 6 as usual, and if you use it for an attack it gives +2 to the attack’s damage as usual.

While out of combat, a magical girl or boy can use this to regain 1d6+2 Resolve

Age: 16

Appearance: Hotaru is a shorter girl, with black hair in a shoulder length ponytail. She has brown eyes, and has thin-rimmed glasses. Out of classes she wears relatively average clothes, generally in various shades of grey.

Magical Appearance: Hotaru’s hair becomes silver in this form, as do her eyes, and her glasses disappear. She also then wears an extravagant gown, that one would assume would be impractical for combat but ends up being a non-issue because of its magical properties.

Description: A shy girl, a bit of a wallflower, who focuses heavily on her studies to the exclusion of many social aspects.

Background: Hotaru has never really been a… social, sort of person. She’s always caught up in books, school, manga, or other things like that. She wants to contract because she wants to have something that might let her meet people. Were she given a wish, she’d wish to have friends. Her parents were both recently killed in a car crash, leaving her with no choice but to go to an orphanage.

Magical Element: Glass

Magical Weapon: Staff. The type you hit people with.

Magical Power: Walk Through Walls.

Minor Action
Create a link between two enemies or two allies within a range of 0-2, which can include yourself. You must designate a primary and secondary target for the link when you create it. Any time any effect (damage, status effects, healing, talent effects, etc.) affects the primary target, you may choose to give the secondary target a copy of the same effect as a free action. A link will end at the end of the scene, or when you create a different link.

Implode
Major Action, 2/Episode
Make a Support vs. Support challenge against an enemy. If you are successful, until the end of your next turn any time the enemy deals damage to a target, it takes half that damage (round up) itself.

This is not first-come first-serve. I will be taking 4-6 players if anyone’s interested, and they will be picked based on how I like their sheets and how active they are on the forums. There will be a waitlist, in case of drop-outs or death. The game is still in the planning phase, so if you have questions now is the time to ask.

Magical Girl/Boy Name, if you have one: Sky Pirate Sora, the Marvelous Captainess

Gender: Female
Sex: Female

Age: 16

Appearance: Miki is a rather short girl, with light brown hair and green eyes, to the extent she is often mistaken for a girl two years younger than her. She likes wearing rather casual attire, like T-shirts and jeans.

Magical Appearance: More or less the same as normal Miki, but with more piratical attire; a large, red greatcoat with golden thread to hold it closed and large brass buttons, a three-cornered hat for style, two brown leather boots and khaki pants to complete the pirate look. Her cutlass and flintlock are holstered at her belt.

Description: Friendly and free-spirited, with a seemingly unshakeable will. She's free with her hugs, and even freer with her dramatic poses. She does have a love for shiny things, in the form of liking to decorate things with flowers and glitter though. She also has a flair for the theatrical, often making dramatic declarations or entrances.

Background:
Miki is an orphan who never knew her parents. This doesn't bother her one bit; her caretaker is one of the nicest people she's ever met, a kindly old man and Miki never really felt like she needed to know her parents anyway. She lives in the city's orphanage, going to school and hanging out with her fellow orphan children. There are occasional hardships when they try to close down the place (they being scumbag developers) or when her friends get adopted and never see her again, but for Miki, the sadness usually passes. After all, it's better to have friends even if they leave than to never have them at all, right?

“What kind of person are you?”
A blithe, free-spirited kind of person, who's always quite friendly and rather free with her friendliness and hamminess.

“What reason will you have to make a pact?”
To protect her friends, of course. Is there any other reason why?

“What will your wish be when you get it?”
To find the World's Greatest Treasure, no strings attached or catches (she's not a fan of booby-trapped treasure).

What the school knows:
Orphan who lives in a nearby orphanage and is a good runner, but has rather mediocre-to-average grades. Still a fun person to be around.

Magical Power: Summon Skyship: As part of her magical powers, Miki inherited a flying skyship that flies above the clouds, remaining out of sight of the normals, from the last magical girl to call herself 'Sky Pirate'. Miki can manipulate and control this ship, being able to teleport on and off of it with anyone she likes at will, as well as being able to use it to fly around the city. The ship possesses living space for other magical girls, such as beds and some sort of automatic kitchen and other functions, such as cannons; however, these functions require magical strength and potency which Miki does not currently possess, and so are for the moment nonfunctional. The ship is useful for making dramatic entrances via swinging on a rope and shooting at the youma.

Magical Element: Air/Sky

Magical Weapon: A pair of magical weapons, actually:
Sky Flintlock: A stylized, slightly oversized flintlock pistol, with cloud patterns engraved onto the brass barrel and intricate swords carved into the stock. The ammunition fires with light-green trails, being propelled by wind magic.
Sky Cutlass: A sleek, sharp cutlass that leaves green trails when slashing through the air. The hilt and guard is golden, marked with intricate characters, and the blade is supernaturally sharp.
Both weapons are used in her Metal Waltz attack.

Hex (Pirate's Brand)
Minor Action
Place a Hex on a target within a range of 0-2. The target takes 1 point of damage at the start of each round until the end of the scene. Damage from Hexes is not considered an attack. You can place multiple Hexes on the same target, but you can only place one Hex in a round. On your turn, you may remove all or part of the Hexes you’ve placed on a target as a free action.

Blast Strike (Gunfire Diplomacy)
Major Action, 1 Overcharge (Attack)
Make a basic attack and choose one position within range. Each target within that position must attempt to defend themselves or take normal damage from the attack.

Gender: Female
Sex: Female

Age: 15
Appearance: A quite short girl, even for her age, Yoko does not seem very imposing no matter how you look at it. She has rather short blonde hair and brown eyes. Other than that, there really isn't much to say.

Magical Appearance: Same as above, though much, much taller. She looks almost 18-ish in her magical girl form, for some reason. Her magical girl form also wears pitch black robes with a hood, with a white cross on both the front and back. She also has blank, white fingerless gloves, and white sandals. She also has a black mitre on her head, adorned with white and gold patterns. Anyone who knew Yoko's family, particularly before the accident, would note the form looks oddly... familiar, though why that is they can't really tell.

Description: Yoko is a caring individual who, in her own words, 'just wants to help others'. Unfortunately, she's also incredibly stubborn and often doesn't know when to stop, trying to 'help' even when there is no need for it. Unsurprisingly, this often doesn't turn out well, though, naturally, that doesn't mean it can't. It does, sometimes. Just not always.
Of course, she can also be incredibly apologetic at times, even while being stubborn. Claims of 'look I'm sorry but this is necessary', 'I'm sorry for messing up' and other such things aren't rare, though not exactly common either.

Background: Yoko's had a pretty normal life, all things considered. Sure, her mom's dead, but, well, she's been dealing alright. She hopes. She's not actually sure about that. Still, after a pretty long time spent in mourning, she and her dad recovered and supported each other. Though, anybody who really knew Yoko noticed that after her mom died, her helpful tendencies... multiplied. A lot. Beforehand, she was helpful enough, but nothing truly exceptional.  After that, though... It's clear that while she says she's been dealing alright with her grief, and that even seems true to an extent, it definitely affected her pretty deeply.

Nowadays, outside of her attempts at helping others, she doesn't do much. Helping out around town, helping out at home, hell, helping out at the cafe... It's very much part of her life. She does well enough in school as well, overall, but she doesn't really participate in most extracurricular activities.

Helpful and friendly, of course! People should be nice to each other, after all.

I'll wish for all disease to disappear from this world, without any negative consequences. That's... all I really want, right now.

Magical Power: Restoration: Bringing living and non-living things back to what can be considered their 'best' state. Repairing items, healing sicknesses, they all fall under this power's purview. (Fluff for sorceries, basically.)

Magical Element: Darkness

Magical Weapon: A giant 'hammer', though it would be more appropriate to call it a massive ball of steel at the end of a rod. Easily larger than she is. It emits a loud ringing sound when swung, and an even louder one upon impact.

Remove one negative status effect from yourself or one ally
within a range of 0-2. You may remove additional status effects
by taking 1 Support Overcharge per effect removed.

The Consuming Dark(Implode)
Major Action, 2/Episode
Make a Support vs. Support challenge against an enemy. If you
are successful, until the end of your next turn any time the
