Chasm / Bridge Question
« on: April 06, 2008, 02:20:00 am »

I have a Chasm, and I have a diverted Brook that I wish to get to the other side of the Chasm.  Without changing the diverted Brook water to a different z-level, I tried to build a Bridge to span the Chasm. However, my Dwarves refuse to build my Bridge.  No matter that many of them have Architecture already enabled and nothing else to do, none of them will approach the Bridge.  Ergo, it sits unfinished, all construction Suspeneded while awaiting Architecture.  I know that the Bridge is approachable, at least the end on my side of the Chasm.  What I am doing wrong or overlooking with Bridges and Chasms?

Well, I'm not an expert, but I had a similar problem once trying to bridge a chasm. When placing the bridge, how does it raise/retract, if the dwarves can't get to the side it's retracting up towards, they can't build it, so you'll need to change the raise direction (or make it retract), but if that's the case a message should come up.

Also, sometimes it is possible to place a bridge that has no parts over solid land. Iif this happens the dwarves will completely ignore the fact there is a bridge supposed to be there and you won't get any error messages, this one can be solved by placing part of it over land that they can reach.

Sounds definitely like the problem is that the side that has to be accessible to build the bridge is on he other side of the chasm.

I had the same problem once with a channel I wanted to be bridged (it was a long tunnel that should lead to the trade depot with retrcting bridges as safety measures in case of an invasion) . The other side of the channel was intentionally left inacessible (to prevent any goblins from sneaking in befoe all security measures were completed). Well, the bridge would always get suspended because of the inaccessible other side and so I had to dig open the tunnel from the other side (after I had done this the bridge got successfully built however)

did you unsuspend the construction?

That definitely sounds like you need to press [q], highlight the bridge and press to unsuspend it, as tp12 mentioned. If you see a red "Construction suspended" when viewing the bridge, that means that your dwarves will make absolutely no attempt to continue constructing the thing until you manually unsuspend it.

I would think you would just want a constructed floor/wall aqueduct though... Wouldn't a bridge spill most of it?

There's also a very good possibility that monsters are hanging around inside the chasm.  Civilians don't like most things inside caverns and are scared away by them.

you don't want a bridge! You want an aqueduct.

but you probably can't build the bridge because they want to start it from the other side or something. if you make the bridge raiseable instead of retractable, you can choose which side to start construction from. Might be a different situation, but that is the problem that I would sometimes encounter when trying to build a bridge

Another problem that may have caused construction to suspend is item blockage - if you've got loose items (especially stones) on the bridge squares, it will auto-suspend the building anytime a dwarf tries to build it. If there are any, haul them away.

This is normally no problem if there is free space next to the construction to be built.
The dwarves building the construction are perfectly capable of removing any blocking items by themselves (and put them on a spot next to the construction).
problems only arise if there is no free spot next to the construction [for the purpose of stone hauling: Free could also mean that there are stones on the tile, stones donīt count as items blocking a spot]
or if the items that block the site are forbidden or marked for anothr construction (this is a problem I regularly have when building multiple paved roads next to each other)
But anytime else they remove the stones themselves without problems [well observable by looking at the way a workshop gets built in a room full of stones; before finishing the construction the dwarf runs multiple times around between the workshop area and the tiles next to the workshop to haul stones away].

I am using a retractable Bridge.  I also have access to both sides of the Chasm where I am building my Bridge, so pathing and innaccessable materials should not be an issue.  I have tried with one end of the Bridge overlapping the floor on either side of the Chasm as well.  There are no materials on the ground on either side to block construction.  I tried resuming construction, but it was immediately suspended again.  I remain mystified as to why they refuse to build the Bridge.

On the other hand, I thought Aqueducts were removed.  I take it I can piece together an Aqueduct using a combination of Floor and Wall tiles?

What is the suspend message you're getting? Knowing that would let us do more than make vague guesses in the dark.

Construction is suspended while the Bridge awaits Architecture.  However, I have two Mechanics with Building Design, and only Building Design, enabled.  Moreover, each of my eight Peasants also has Building Design enabled.  I know that they can all path to the edge of the Bridge on either side of the Chasm, as some have done this to carry materials away.

Press (a) to see a list of recent messages.  Are there any that explicitly say that the bridge construction is being suspended?  These will generally specify why.

I think when the OP says "suspended" he might mean to say "inactive".  This appears on they [q]uery screen of a construction site when there just isn't anyone currently assigned to the building.  I have had similar problems with building designs taking a long time.  I think it is a low priority task so you may just have to be patient and wait for your dwarves to get around to it.
