It seems that you can start playing as a soldier from an existing army  :o

That's a member of a bandit camp. They're called 'lieutenants'.
You can join bandits during the game too if you're not lucky enough to start as one.

There's some interesting start locations if you keep scrolling through them. Dark pits, caves, camps. I started in the sewers of one city last time I played, apparently part of the 'sprawling criminal organization'. The room I started in was packed with peasant bodies which was...somewhat disturbing.

The only issue is that, despite it being your home, you can't Fast Travel out of your starting camp/cave/pit. Which is pretty annoying if it's a really big dark pit.

Or if its a sewer with no exit, long flooded exit or needs flying to get out. Ive literally modded in intelligent creatures with flying and amphibious simply to be able to find creatures in sewers.

Oh yeah, that would be irritating. Starting in a Dwarf Fortress and you kind of know you have a small chance of being stuck underground forever. Starting as a peasant in a 'city' and finding yourself in an unescapable sewer would be really annoying.

In my case I found the exit ladder a few rooms away and came out in a keep full of nobles apparently oblivious to the carnage beneath their feet. Distracted by all the naked goblin dancers no doubt...

I somehow seem to have spawned in a fortress with only one resident and no way out. It's only two levels tall, too. Not sure what the Hell made it.

Kill the resident and declare all the furniture as citizenry.

It worked out well for Taupe in Doomforests... relatively speaking.

I hate when that happens. I've also had characters start in Mountainhomes and find out their cave adapted when I emerge from the caverns.

Eat the resident and declare the engravings as citizenry.

I wonder - is there anything special to do as a lieutenant? Are you able to command anyone, organise raids, etc. or is it just a title?

'Lieutenant' is just bandit-speak for 'Hearthperson'. It's exactly the same thing.
Even Toady said Hearth's are essentially just well-off bandits right now...
