You don't need an army if you have four well-armoured, legendary weapon/wrestler/shield/armor user.

I saw champions slauthering dozens of goblins single-handedly. They are brutal.

I think one champion as I described would be the biggest challenge one can face in adventure mode. Never got a strong enough adventurer to face one though.
