Who Killed Champion Rith?
« on: April 05, 2008, 07:17:00 pm »

All right, I just lost three champions in battle. One was shot and the other two?... Well, maybe my strategy was bad. Maybe they didn't have good armour. I don't know a good way to manage armour since you can set their armour level but that doesn't mean they have it. It's kind of a pain to zoom to each dwarf and check their inventory. It's disappointing to lose three champions in one battle, though. There weren't that many goblins and few of them had bows.

So champions aren't invincible... okay, but they are usually really tough - capable of destroying a dozen goblins, single-handedly. So my question is, how in the world did I lose a champion sparring?

I only saw that she had bled to death. I found her body and saw a mass of blood leading from the upper barracks, downstairs and the short distance to where she died. It's kind of annoying to be unable to find out what happened. I can't see the wounds... where is my coroner dwarf?

However, the main thing is this: I've lost a couple dwarves to training accidents but I can't fathom losing a champion. It just seems wrong.

A lucky hit with a spear could easily damage vital spots. A dwarf with a red throat wound isn't going to last long, champion or no.

True. I just think that should not happen with champions... or be very, very rare. Perhaps this was rare, though..?   ;)

Without amour, you can only do so much if you get hit by a steel spear, even if you are amazingly tough.

Of course, sometimes its just chance. I once had a Elite *something*, who, wearing his iron greaves, somehow managed to get a mangled upper leg from sparring.

Yes, that is why dwarves bring babies along during battle.

I nicknamed the military commander of my last fort "Mother Fury" because she was giving births constantly and carrying her offspring with her into battle. Into the torrent of flying bolts. And the infants always survived.
I was planning to have her firstborn son trained into the finest soldier DF has ever seen, but the goblins overwhelmed us before he could be brought up and he fell with the fortress.

Masterwork obsidian swords will kill the most skilled of dwarves in training, even with plate armour.  To set up armour, set the dwarves to on duty, give them Iron chain (use the stocks menu), let them deck themselves out then set them to plate.  Voila, layered plate and chain.  Seems to work most of the time.  The odd dwarf seems to pick up a layer of leather as well.

I'm 99% sure that, if possible, they always wear a chain layer as well when they're set to plate.

The biggest factor I've seen in getting dwarves to survive any kind of violence is shields.  A dwarf with a high-quality shield and good skill with it has a good chance of escaping all sorts of violence without harm.

You haven't yet seen the comedy of assigning new immigrants masterwork HFS axes with wooden bucklers and regular clothes for armour.

I've been using that to weed out the best from the weaklings that come in the immigrant waves for training.

They walk through showers of goblin arrows as if it would just be a light summer rain  :D

Look through all your military dwarves until you see one with " Took joy in slaughter lately " There's your killer =P

On a side note, i've found wrestling to be the most dangerous bar none.. My dwarves almost always suffocate or suffer massive brain/spine injuries, even with maxed armor/shield skills and masterwork steel plate.
