This thing hasn't died already, has it?

Sometimes lurkers, like myself, are too lazy to post the obvious action. And in this case using the hairs was an obvious choice. When there are branching choices or something that requires speculation, I will participate more.

Having said that, I will +1 this post:

Well let's use the hairs then.

Nope. You just posted fairly late last night, when this part of the forum is kinda dead. Stirk has his job to get to today and couldn't do anything :0.

Well we got our lead. Its not like the curios here are going anywhere anytime soon, and hair can lead us strait to the target if we are lucky. +1 to using the hairs.

Well let's use the hairs then.

With hair in hand, there was nothing left to do but set up a tracking spell. I retrieved my handy-dandy wizarding equipment (actually just a really cheap compass) from my pocket and prepared it for the spell, taping the hairs to the bottom and muttering an incantation. The needle snapped around and pointed resolutely in an arbitrary direction - presumably towards Welverin’s location.

It was time for me to hit the streets. I strode downstairs to the front door and pulled it open, stepping out into the -

There was a pregnant pause as the two officers and I stared at each other in awkward silence. Then I spoke up.

“Officer Omroryn, what a pleasant surprise! How’s the family?”

Officer Talrene Omroryn refrained from returning the greeting. “When the call came in about a suspicious elf in frumpy robes breaking into a missing man’s house, I somehow knew I’d find you here, Aldryn.”

I put an affronted hand over my heart. “While your pattern-recognition abilities are impeccable, I’ll have you know my robes are not frumpy, officer. They are classic wizarding fashion.”

I paused for a moment.

“Oh, and I wasn’t breaking in. While that’s less important than defending my sartorial honor, I think it deserves a mention.”

Omroryn’s partner smiled lazily. He’d seen this dance before. I nodded politely at him and he nodded back.

“Kenval.”

“Navar.”

Talrene crossed her arms and shifted her weight to her other foot. “Xune hired you?”

“Possibly. Or maybe I just like rifling through missing people’s houses for the hell of it.”

She ignored my ironclad alibi of kleptomania. “Did you find what you were looking for?”

“Yep. Couple of hairs.”

“Wonderful. Let’s go, you’re on the clock for us too now. We’ll explain on the way.” She turned and gestured for me to follow Kenval and her. I raised an eyebrow as I tagged along. I’d done work as a consultant wizard for the Coranzen Police Department before, but I’d never been hired by both the CPD and an individual for the same job at the same time.

Two clients, twice the pay. I wasn’t complaining.

We reached their car (which was much nicer than mine, not that I was comparing or anything) and climbed in. As we rolled out of the neighborhood, I turned my attention to the compass. The needle swerved slightly as the car moved.

“So what’s the situation? And why didn’t you just call my office instead of hunting me down in person?” I asked.

Omroryn glanced back at me with a frank expression. “We did call your office. Several times, actually. You weren’t able to take the calls because you were too busy snooping.”

Kenval turned in his seat and began expositing. “Khalazza went missing, you already know that. Two other drow have vanished into thin air in similar circumstances.”

Omroryn took over. “There’s a connection between all three. They worked -”

I cut her off, still looking at the compass. “Take a left up here.” She adjusted our course accordingly.

“They worked for Bakos Mining Corp, all at the same facility near the southern end of the city. Three engineers working at the same place all went missing in a matter of days.”

I frowned as I considered the new information. “Huh. Take a right.”

She pulled into the right-hand lane. As I watched the compass, the needle suddenly darted around, jittering wildly and alternating between two different directions. Something was either wrong with the spell or interfering with it (or I had made a boneheaded mistake somewhere along the line, but, as a mighty wizard, that was clearly out of the question). I glanced up at the two officers, who were waiting patiently for the next direction.

This could be a problem.

Definitely below, seeing as they are Drow miners. Seems to be pretty obvious :p.

Do we have any spells that would help out here? X-ray vision, thermal vision (probably will be blocked off by all the rock...), scrying, etc?

+1' and tell the officers what is happening, and that it could mean that the miner is nearby.

Reorient the compass vertically.  Is it pointing downwards?

Check the hairs.  Are they all the same?

If all else fails, tell it like it is, our tracking spell is on the fritz and we suspect interference.

Well, that or he's in two pieces.

Explain the complication, then try to follow one of the two jitter-directions. Ideally the one that looks closer to where we were going, if that's an option.

“Pull over here for a moment. Something’s up with my tracker.”

As the car slowed to a halt, I angled the compass up and down, checking above and below our position. No change - the needle continued to jump back and forth.

“I think something might be…” I flipped the tracker over and checked the hairs.

“...interfering.”

I’d forgotten that there were two people living in that house. Xune had white hair - Welverin’s must be brown. I removed the white hairs and discarded them. The needle pointed in one direction again.

I cleared my throat awkwardly. “Nevermind. Slight oversight. Carry on.” The two officers magnanimously refrained from commenting and the car began moving again.

We navigated through Coranzen, eventually winding our way into the industrial district near the southern end of the city. Soon the streets were empty of other cars, illuminated by the eerie glow of the flickering streetlights. Vacant warehouses and abandoned factories towered over us.

The compass’ needle began pivoting. I glanced up at the darkened walls of the complex to our right. “I think we found him. Circle around this building.” As we slowly took a lap around the structure to triangulate Welverin’s position, I became more certain that he was inside.

At least, I was until the compass snapped back to pointing north.

I blinked in confusion and checked the hairs again. Nothing wrong there. The spell was still in effect.

“We may have encountered an unexpected problem,” I said. “Something broke the sympathetic link. The most likely culprit is running water. Second guess would be fire.”

Omroryn slowed the vehicle and pulled into the empty parking lot next to the building. “Are you sure he was in this building before the connection broke?”

I nodded. “I’m sure.”

“Good enough for me,” she said. I was flattered. “If he was there thirty seconds ago, odds are he’s still there now. Now we just need to know why he’s there.”

Officer Kenval studied the factory’s exterior contemplatively and said, “There’ll be a main office just past reception and a showroom coming off of that. First floor will have the assembly line and storage near the loading dock behind the building. Second floor should just be more workspace and storage. Utilities would probably be ‘round the back or in a basement, if anyone’s looking to restore power. If the tracking spell’s broken, we’re going to have to search for him manually.”

I looked at the policeman with mild surprise. “When did you become an expert on factory layouts?” I asked.

He shrugged slightly and said, “It’s the family business. Not all Kenvals join the force.”

Omroryn interrupted our heart-to-heart backstory moment. “We need to get moving. We don’t want to risk losing this lead.”

((Armed with only general knowledge of the building's layout, the trio must find Khalazza while staying safe from any potential dangers. How do they approach the situation?))
