The challenge is "who can survive the longest with their first fortress in the new version."  Might be easy for some, but I expect to have a hard time dealing with all the new changes so it will be a challenge for me.

Maybe there should be a sort of finish line, ten years maybe, and whoever reaches that point wins?  Just so it doesn't go on forever.

This is not a challenge, but simply a competition. A challenge is when you restrict the gameplay so that the game becomes significantly harder than it's supposed to be.

The "challenge" part doesn't come from limiting the what you can do but from adding new things to make the game almost unrecognizable.

That being said, I want to join, too.

I plan on building an underground fortress, like true dwarves, which means I'll probably kill my fort by accidentally striking the underside of a river. Just like true DF dwarves.

Edit to make the first paragraph actually make sense.

As if. Striking the underside of an underground river is a wimpy way to die.

Real dwarves strike the underside of a magma flow.

I'll give it a go, though I'll be forced to limit to 75 or 80 dwarves due to any more killing my cpu. D:

I suppose I'll be in the Copper Dwarf Challenge.

I'm in.  Although, with my luck, while I am technically in the Irondwarf challenge, I will actually consider myself to be the lead runner in the "Glassdwarf challenge".  In which the winner is, of course, the first participant of the Irondwarf Challenge to go down to ignominious defeat.
I am confident I can win.  Lol.

Eh, I might as well have a go as well, then. But, yeah, my computer go's at 30 FPS
with the 7 starting dwarves, so I highly doubt my ability to go very far in this.

it's almost certainly not your graphics card, as even a cheapy onboard card should be able to handle the very basic rendering DF does.

most likely it's your CPU, though 30 fps is pretty low for the starting 7. Try turning temperature and weather off and see if that helps any (should at the very least double the fps).

If it's stable at 30fps then it's almost certainly something like a vsync problem, if it fluctuates and goes down as you get more dwarves then it could well be a cpu limitation.

Bump.

Just don't want people to forget 'bout this challenge, in which there will be many lulz.

Anyway, I turned off temp and weather like suggested and the speed doubled. Thanks!

Did it double exactly? like 30fps -> 60fps? cos then it is possible youre still getting owned by vsync.

It stays at a steady 60 FPS, unless I go to a menu, then it speeds up to about 75.

But, if it's Vsync, I can always turn it off next version, eh?
