The Irondwarf Challange
« on: October 01, 2007, 11:21:00 pm »

I was thinking on this at work yesterday

we're all going to die horribly in the first fortress of the new version, theres just so much different, so, heres the challenge

THE IRON DWARF CHALLENGE

On the day of release, you starts a new fortress (that much goes without saying really) and post the status page on the forums. this give the name and date of your fortress.
After that, you try and last as long as possible before it all goes horribly wrong and Everybody Dies. may sound easy but this is a new version. the only rule will be no population control, either by murder or editing the INI.

So what do people think? suggestions on how to improve greatfully received.

The new version isn't going to be that hard. The worst part will be designing 3D farms.

If it's going to be so easy, then you shouldn't have any fear of entering right?

I think this sounds like a fun idea.  I know I'm sure I'll find a pretty quick way to die horribly.  Starvation seems likely as a general rule, now that rivers aren't guaranteed and all that.  I'm in.

It's an interesting idea, though I suspect Grek might be right - depending on how much toady has changed you will probably end up with half the people having self supporting forts where everyone does not die. Getting the farms right with the new flow system (no nile farming, dunno how floodgates work exactaly) is probably going to be the hardest part. heck IIRC he even said enemies still don't dig or anything so you can just rewall yourself into the fort and ignore the outside world completely.

Other then that, I suggest you allow lowering the popcap to at least 100 - my computer already runs slow with that many and the next version can only be worse. If I have to have it set at 200, I don't know that I'll be able to finish.

You should also specify if temperature/weather are allowed to be shut off. With temperature off, breeching a lava bubble (if they exist?) or a lava flow could be fortress ending with the new flow system, but with temp off it would be no problem.

bonus points should be awarded to those brave souls who pick maps with elephants, or skeletal elephants.

anyway, I'll certainly join in, though like I said if the rules are 200 dwarf cap I might have to abandon early due to slowdown.

Now this sounds like a challenge I could get into. I will debate on how I shall do my updates, but, we shall see.

Lava drowns in the new version with temp off and so is as deadly as water, except slower.

I accept your challenge.

Come hell or high water my dwarves will live to prosper. Even if I have to micromanage every last step to keep them alive.

I typically can't bear to lose dwarves, so I'd probably be doing this anyway. I'm in! I don't think farming will be that hard, though finding water might be trickier. I plan to try a fortress with dangerous creatures, or maybe a glacier fort, too.

If this is a real Iron Dwarf challenge, you need to specify something to make it difficult, and with everyone on a similar footing. Something like Sinister maps only. Oh, and I suggest allowing no INI mods. My computer is pretty slow, but that feels like cheating.

maybe a split between pop limits 100 and pop limits 200 would be the fairest.

and yeah, this might be easy, even with the new version, but its still going to be how long can you keep the place alive without population control. thats a challenge in itself, I know some people get board/annoyed with fortresses long before the goblins bash down the door and meet the pit demons coming the other way.
So it may be that we end up with a few forts still going after a long time, but thats the whole point in the Irondwarf challenge. to see who breaks first.
That said, my current forts last about 8 years before something catastrophic happens.

I'm confident that I'll find ten new ways to obliterate a fortress in the new version before I manage to get a fortress self-sufficient.

If I can manage, I'm in as well. My only problem with it is that it means I won't be able to go completely crazy with my first fortress (depending on how bad I want to win... I might do it anyway, and count on phenomenal luck).

See you folks at the Burial Grou- I mean Finish Line!
