Strange accidents in public places
« on: May 20, 2016, 02:48:18 am »

I had two strange cases in my fortress recently.

The first one is a dead military dwarf inside the training room. There are no combat reports and his health was good enough to live a long life.

The second one just happened. My dwarves found two corpses inside a tavern -- tavern keeper and goblin guest.

There are no combat reports and it seems that I don't have a vampire in my fortress because the only citizens that don't have a bedroom are the dwarf from the starting squad and a child (according to the Wiki, they can't be vampires).

There are no information about these cases in the "Justice" menu either.

What can it be?

There is no vomit around their corpses so I don't think that it's an alcohol poisoning either.

Check legends or engrave a slab. It could have just been old age.

Old age deaths happens on the turn of the year (all at the same time). There's a DFHack command ("deathcause" or something like that) that might give an indication.

Is DFHack available for 0.43.01?

Suffocated? What does it mean?

Sounds like alcohol, perhaps? The only other things I can think of that cause suffocation are lung damage (via wound or syndrome) or being choked to death.

But there was no vomit around them.

Have you killed any titans or forgotten beasts lately? A syndrome is the only other option I can think of, since you already checked combat logs. Their blood can have interesting and delayed effects.

Dorfs have a tendency to clean up vomit, especially to locations that are close to where they happen to be... Death by suffocation in the tavern: very likely to be alcohol poisoning, unless syndromes, etc. can reasonably be suspected. It is possible for a bar brawl where the opponent damaged the victim's lungs sufficiently for suffocation, but excessive alcohol consumption is still the most likely cause by far. It usually takes a number of attempts from the tavern keeper/performer to successfully generate enough compound lung damage to kill the victims. but unless you monitor your tavern patrons you'll usually discover it when it's too late.

I used to have this problem so I transferred all tavern personnel to the temple. So far it seems to be working, but if other dwarfs can serve alcohol, it won't probably.

As long as you remove the performers as well there won't be any poisoning activity in the tavern (barring syndromes dragged in and animals let lose).
