Unless it can be rivals more in the sense of X and Y then the first games, in which case it could work fine.

Hell, even back in the Gen this takes place in your rivals weren't exactly people you were unfriendly with.

Yeah, Wally wasn't exactly your enemy, and May/Brendan wasn't all that bothered about the whole thing. It was mainly Gen I and II that your rival was a dick.

Backstory: Kendra was born and raised in Castelia City, in the Unova region. She likes water Pokemon, having often spent time on the various docks and piers of the city, although she never had one of her own. She moved to Hoenn to live with her grandfather when her parents had to leave on a business trip and couldn’t bring her with them. Her grandfather, himself a Pokemon trainer in the past and a friend of the local Professor, thought it would be good for her to go on the same sort of journey and contacted his friend to see if he had any Pokemon available.

EDIT: Also, screw it. I changed my type specialty to Normal type. Norman route for the win. I've also changed my starter to Starly (Flying/Normal) type to match.
EDIT 2: I promise, this is my last type change. I'm going for Flying type instead. Alright. You may resume.
