Getting rid of annoying habit.
« on: May 18, 2016, 12:30:50 pm »

I have a habit of biting my lips during moments of nervousness or anxiety.
Any ideas of how to stop biting my lips?

Hmm, Have you considered chewing gum instead?

Google suggests teaching yourself to be hyperaware of it so that you can consciously replace it with a different, more life-affirming habit. Be persistent, any time you feel the urge to chew your lip, do the other thing. I suggest interpretive dance.

A friend of mine got rid of that habit by doing a handstand whenever he felt the urge

Biting your lip is nowhere near as bad as grinding your teeth, which will actually damage your teeth. Unless you chew your lips into a bloody mess, which also can't be healthy.

As far as neurotic tics go, lip-biting isn't that bad.
But yeah, what people said. You could try replacing it with another motion if it makes you uncomfortable.

One suggestion I heard is to wear a rubber band around your wrist, and whenever you get the urge to do the bad habit, or catch yourself doing the bad habit, immediately snap the rubber band so it stings a bit.   I guess the theory is that it makes you aware of the urge/behavior/urge, and associates pain with it - " self-administered aversive conditioning" heh.

Or you can just stop yourself when you catch yourself starting to do it. Quitting biting my lip was much easier than quitting biting my nails.

As others said, self-awareness on what you're doing usually works. Realise what you're doing and immediately stop and do something else. Eventually, you'll train yourself out of the habit. Though if you're doing it because of anxiety or something like that, maybe looking into the root cause of those problems would be helpful. Otherwise there's a good chance of just replacing it with something else like nail-biting, hair-pulling, whatever.

Basicly what everyone said. Drugs aren't of much use for this kind of habit. Milder forms of Tourrette or other tics tend to respond better to drugs.

I really want that one as a "when". I want "grubs", and "virgin woman" to turn into a dragon. and monkey children to suddenly sprout wings. And I want the Dwarven Mutant Academy to only gain their powers upon reaching puberty. I also have a whole host of odd creatures that only make sense if I divide them into children and adults.

Also, tadpoles.

Chop your lips off to instantly prevent you from biting them again.
