I'm avoiding talking about changing the characters movements and attacks a lot because I like the way you are going with it.
You tell me now? I've just whipped up a mouse-controlled system, I'll get some people to check it out before making any further decisions. I personally like the arrow keys but if people would prefer a mouse based attack it's easy enough to add.

Whoa what I mean I wouldn't change the 'pressured' part of the game. Alot of making the controls feel nicer means making the game easier, you know.

A little indie spark goes a long way.
And a tip for your artist: You need at least three frames. The main character looks remarkably good despite this, but you still need at least three frames.
An odd number of frames are standard.
You might look into making an animator in Unity, if you haven't already. They're not too complicated its just a bit hard to find all the facts in one go.
