I had a look at the old thread but posting there would be a 2 year necro with a very outdated title and first post so I decided to start a new one instead.

You may or may not know that the Guns of Icarus Online devs were working on a co-op expansion to the game, well it's available for testing released now on both the humble store and steam. All you have to do is buy it and send the devs a copy of your receipt in an email asking to be part of the testing team play. I've been enjoying the game with a friend and hope some of you will join us soon.

Release Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utgPtBHDAUA

For those who do not know what Guns of Icarus is and can't be bothered to check the old thread, Guns of Icarus Online is a competitive airship combat game when teams of up to 4v4 ships fight in team deathmatch or objective matches. The game is extremely reliant on communication and teamwork, one player captains/flies the ship and the remaining 3 crew members are gunners and/or engineers in charge of running all over the ship and manning guns and repairing all the things that keep breaking because your pilot likes flying too close to mountains. The game is played from a first-person perspective and can be quite immersive. Bay12 played the game together for some time and as far as I know, we had a lot of fun doing so. When you buy Alliance, you get a free copy of the base, pvp game.

Alliance features a bunch of new co-op match types with teams of up to 4 airship(16 players), some of which are defensive and some offensive in nature. The enemies are new AI airships of various sizes, ground installations, and various fighter types. There are also boss ships which are trickier to take out with weak points that have to be taken out. There is a sort of director AI like in the Left 4 Dead games that assesses the tension in the match and will crank the difficulty up/down as needed to keep you on your toes(although if you ask me it's a bit on the sadistic side of things at the moment, but it's great !!fun!!). There are 4 new playable airships at the moment and there may be more added later which have varied purposes and playstyles, a bunch of new guns, rebalanced weaponry, new tool and special abilities to unlock for all classes so you can specialize, new faction costumes. Yes, Alliance features AI factions. You align with one of them(you can switch at any time at a 20% faction rating loss cost) and conquer map areas in their name to gain favor and unlock new thing.

Key features:

  • Player vs. AI—1 ship to 4 ships = 1 to 16 players
  • Entirely new game modes focused on objective, teamwork oriented goals
  • New maps teeming with danger
  • New ships and weapons designed with large scale combat in mind
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

  • Intelligent AI that adjusts to your skill level
  • Player progression, faction, class, and cosmetic unlocks
  • Joinable factions that can influence the events of the world
  • "Permanent player driven game history that changes the story of the world"

To help test the game, just send a copy of your receipt to feedback@musegames.com and don't forget to send them your feedback to help improve the game. Game is out, have fun and report issues and give your feedback to the devs.

I'll add screenshots and potentially video footage of my friend and I's matches if people are interested.

I get the emails for the testing every week; unfortunately, the testing schedule is invariably at 3am on a Sunday Melbourne time, so I've never actually played the beta.

Yes, I was getting rather suspicious when I saw you in-game on Steam.

I am rather worried about testing times as Blarg is, since I typically work about 14-2100 EST. I think Blarg's post suggests they would be about 1300 EST.
I'll probably just keep an eye on it in that case, as my dwarfbuck situation has been kinda low anyways.

The testing events are at noon eastern I believe, but the servers remain up 24/7 for those who want to play. Blarg, if you want people to play it with, just add me on steam, I have the same name there.

I'm a bit skeptic as this has been in development for a loong time, but GoI is extremely fun and the community was great, so I guess I'll keep an eye on it.

It honestly feels like a lot of their problems came from the fact that their entire team was composed of cats, and the people who were supposed to be herding them were also cats.

In case you haven't heard or gotten an email about it, from August 1st to August 8th Guns of Icarus Alliance will be in open alpha for anyone who owns the basic Guns of Icarus Online. Maybe we could organize some matches and you can get a feel for the game to help you decide if it's for you.

I'm sad that I missed this. How did things go? Is the game looking good? How's the player count? I don't know how they plan to have all of this faction stuff with the small playerbase from the GoI:O

The population will probably increase with the arrival of co-op. It was fairly fun, although they still have things to balance and tweak. If you have some feedback for the devs, please send it to them. This week wasn't just about selling more pre-orders, waiting for a more polished version would have been preferable for that. This was primarily to reach new testers due to the low amount of feedback. The devs communicate with and listen to the community. I've had a few talks with them during their dev chat streams and sent them some emails with feedback and they always get back to me.

The devs are currently giving away free copies of the base game to everyone on their mailing list. The copies are going out in a short while. Go to their site and subscribe to news to get a free copy for you or a friend. This giveaway is in celebration of Alliance and to promote the game some more to help keep the playerbase up.

In november, there will be a 2 weeks free open beta for the alliance dlc for anyone who owns the base game.

So as I understand, being an owner of the base game, I can play Alliance during the 'open beta', but after I need to purchase it?

Yes you can play Alliance for free during the beta. After that though, I don't know what their plans are, maybe they'll move it back to the dev app for small group testing or organize another beta. If you like it, sooner or later you'll have to buy it to play. I think it's scheduled to leave beta in early 2017.
