I wonder if this game will actually do what Civ has never been able to do before and make some of the more unique civilizations actually interesting.

No matter how great a Civ is... they often just flat out break down as soon as you escape their era.
Very doubtful, because it's a commercial venture and it is a lot easier to balance things (and not break i.e. bug out the game) when everyone is mostly the same. Just how many multiplayer games do you see with radically asymmetric gameplay in general, or particularly in 4X? I can think of a few 4X games that did that, but most of them specifically tried to do Different precisely to entice players who are looking for that Different 4X experience.

I wouldn't say they necessarily 'break down' though. Unique units become obsolete but unique units affect only one aspect of gameplay and might not even alter your strategy depending on what you're going with (a unique mid-game siege unit might be useless to you if you're trying to tech-win). Civ5 had a bit more with unique civilization effects but I don't recall if any were heavily era-specific. (Some did have start or stop at a particular era, I suppose.)

Will they finally include spontaneous civilization creation, either revolutionary or mongol-type?
Yes, I'd like to see this as well. If it were integrated natively by the devs themselves, they could surely do it a lot cleaner/faster (in terms of processing costs or turn times) than what we get out of the modded-in revolution system from Civ4.

Could we at least make them look interesting in all ages?

I really did not enjoy stacks in Civ IV. Civ V combat is much more dynamic and fun, and I'll fight y'all for it like my name is Gandhi.

Oh, man, I'm liking some of these choices. Motherfuckin' Frederick Barbarossa, Gilgamesh, Saladin, Cleopatra, Teddy Roosevelt, boss lady Victoria herself.

I really don't know anything about some of the picks, but ah well. Nice of Civ to bring some lesser-known folks to the stage - Hojo Tokimune, Qin Shi Huang, Tomyris, Mvemba a Nzinga are all total unknowns to me. Catherine de Medici seems like kind of a dull choice for me, but my view may be colored by reading Protestant-focused accounts where she doesn't come off very well.

EDIT: Reading up on Tomyris, I hope Cyrus the Great becomes a civ leader later. She already killed him once, the trash talk could be amazing.

Russia is simply taking an anti-Fascist stance against European Nazi products, they should be applauded. ¡No parmesan!

The thing is that Stacks and No Stacks didn't really work.

Stacks just ended up leading to Doom Stacks (to such an extent that there were weapons specifically designed to eliminate doom stacks)... and No Stacks ended up with huge bogged down wars.

I might be less sour on 1UPT if they, at any point in the 4 releases after Civ 5, did anything to make it less micromanagement hell... yet they never did.

Yah, it sounds like minecraft with content, you have obviously missed the point, people dont like content, they like different coloured blocks.
Seems to work fine with my copy. As soon as I loaded the human caravan came by and the world burst into fire.

Qin Shi Huang was already a leader in Civ 4, and he was the first emperor of China.

The real curiosity is Gorgo on the leader list, along with Pericles.

Which means we either have both Athens and Sparta as civs (no "Greece") which seems unlikely, or it means that we have multiple leaders for civs.

What is the appeal of hexagonal tiles anyway?

It's the largest regular polygon that tessellates (tiles out evenly). And unlike squares, there is no issue with diagonal movement vs orthogonal movement.

also, It is nearly necessary with the 1 unit per tile feature.
Because otherwise, you end up with linear fronts where it is very hard to attack.

Try measuring the distance between the center of two orthogonal tiles using a measuring stick, then measure the distance between the center of two diagonal tiles. Then compare the measurements.

Agreed, the beauty of hexagonal tiles is each tile is equidistant from every adjacent tile, so no need to account for the extra length of diagonals.

One of the only things I dislike about hexagonal boards vs square boards is the loss of two degrees of freedom.

I might be less sour on 1UPT if they, at any point in the 4 releases after Civ 5, did anything to make it less micromanagement hell... yet they never did.

It's more of a resource availability problem. Many resources=many units.

Diagonal movement on a square board leads to some pretty unintuitive stuff in terms of path lengths as well. And your LoS/ranges have to be square which looks weird.

Oh god, the square LOS debates in DCSS were... quite extensive. literally took 4-5 years to bring the community around.
