Splurged through this whole thing, really loving the playthrough.  There's a nice, spartan sort of feel to it all, and the death avoidance gives everything more of an edge.

Thanks!

Let me take the opportunity to ramble on about some stuff I've been thinking on with this.

I was trying to explain on the Fallout 4 thread why I enjoy this game more than the Witcher III. Heresy! The Witcher III is the best game ever! Well, obviously the story and characters in the Witcher III are amazing. But Fallout is a pretty good platform for the modding community to work with, letting you build your own interesting and challenging play experience. With a good set of mods you can have this kind of slow, deliberative and scary experience that I really like. Getting scared as heck by a single ghoul or mirelurk just isn't going to happen otherwise.

I've actually done much the same thing with Fallout 3, New Vegas, Skyrim, and Call of Pripyat MISERY. (Tried and failed to mod in that kind of experience with the Witcher III.) I've just never posted about it till now.

I follow the CRPG Addict's blog, and something I really agree with him on is the importance of economy and character growth to a good CRPG. Maybe I'm trying to recapture the feeling I had back when I played some of the more classic challenging CRPGs, where you feel up against it, but slowly, ever so slowly, you grow strong. In order to enjoy that feeling of power though you need to start weak, and you really need to earn your progress. I think that's something developers/publishers are kind of afraid of now. As they think it will alienate too many players. You can't ever let the player be -too- weak, and you can't make it be -too- difficult to get stronger. Bethesda especially wants the player to have their cake and eat it. In Fallout 4 you fight and kill a deathclaw right at the start of vanilla. In Skyrim you fight and kill a dragon pretty much right at the start as well. What the hell?? It just has the result of making everything kind of... bland.

Anyway, not quite sure how I will go from levels 20-30. Lots of difficult stuff up ahead, quests that I can't really handle. Problem is that I've neglected investing in intelligence, which actually gives you more xp, simply because I didn't think about it. If I had invested more in intelligence earlier I could get more levels for less effort. So maybe I've pushed myself into a bit of a corner. But then maybe not. If I'm deliberative enough about scrapping up all the easy XP I can then hopefully turn it around and start working towards high intelligence and the science perk. With that I can upgrade my power armor, and then I can maybe take on some real battles.

Yeah, you KINDA fucked yourself infinitely hard doing the Vault 81 quest. Did any of the mole rats hit you? Like, even once? Because if they did you now permanently have 10 less health. You can't get it back without using the cure or cheating. And since the kid was standing in that last screenshot you obviously didn't use the cure...

Also gotta say that the deathclaw fight was weird. Didn't one of the mods you have INCREASE the damage enemies take? Because I've had no problems taking that thing out in survival right out of the gate. Don't see why it was so bullet spongy.

Knew that the Super Duper Mart was a bad idea as soon as you started talking about it, ghouls+ tight spaces+ surprise never ends well.

Yeah, I knew about the minus 10 health as I had done it before. I weighed it up against the experience received, and decided it was worth it. All in all. Permanently losing 10 health does suck a bit, but I gain that much and more each level due to my high endurance. I also am always careful to be well rested, and to wear my plus 2 endurance clothing, giving me plus 4 endurance points on top of my already decent base level.

Regarding the deathclaw, yeah I have found a lot of creatures are harder to kill in general than last time I played. Sometimes significantly more so, such as robots. Some haven't changed much however. What I think is doing it partially is the Arbitration mod. While I also have another mod which removes any level scaling. I think the Arbitration mod has gone through some things, like robots, and massively boosted their resistance to standard bullets. And deathclaws because they are supposed to be super nasty. Other creatures though don't seem to have been adjusted so much.

What tricked me with the Super Duper Mart was that I had made it through safely a number of times before on previous playthroughs. I think I underestimated the extent to which playing with Arbitration would make it more dangerous.

It might just be the enemies you're facing. CQC with a Deathclaw will pretty quickly tear off unupgraded PA pieces, for example.

Oh sure. But I don't want to be able to be rambo against people with regular guns whenever I am wearing this armor. Unless I have worked really hard to upgrade it like heck. For example, in the past with a different mod loadout I found Beantown Brewery doable, but I had to be pretty careful. It was tense. This time I just marched in and wasted everybody without every really feeling very scared.
