The last three days have been pretty uneventful, as I've focused on construction at Sanctuary. So I'm rolling all these into one posting. Building is a great way to get a few extra levels from the xp , while also laying the groundwork for a decent little town. Eventually I'll want to be linking up Sanctuary with my other outposts, supplying food and water to places that can't produce their own.
I really needed to do something about my radiation, but the only radaway in Concord was right near a raider who had avoided being shot by Preston. His armor was looking pretty tough (maybe because of the raider armor mod I have installed), but he was wielding only a tire iron. I was going to risk it. If it went bad I could always lead him back to Red Rocket and get my turret on the roof to gun him down.
And down he went. But it took a while, and my dog did half the work. I couldn't seem to get much damage done with my revolver rifle, so I charged in with Hipster, my modified 10mm, and pumped a good ten rounds or so into him. And that's the first time this character has killed somebody. The first step in her Furiosa transformation.
Along with the radaway I looted a bit of adhesive in town, so I did some modifications to my armor. Some pocketing for extra carry weight. As my strength is so low (3) I really can't carry much. This stuff helps a lot.
I spend what's left of the day starting work on a wall around Sanctuary. I'm using
a mod that makes junk walls snap together nicely. Really helpful.
The next day I do a little trading at the farm for food, and take down a radstag as well. They also give nice xp when you roast their meat up. I've burned through all the food supplies I initially scavenged, but I'm also not happy to be spending my savings buying expensive vegetables with my low charisma. Not sure what can be done.
More wall building at Sanctuary gets me to level 7. I choose the Action Girl perk. These are super important for allowing me to fight with less risk. Especially when going up against multiple opponents like ghouls in somewhere like Super Duper Mart in the future.
Towards the end of the day seven I see somebody approaching. I thought it was Carla coming to trade (nope, she only comes after you first meet her near the Diner), but it was a settler bringing a brahmin. Excellent.
The brahmin gets its own little paddock with a feed trough.
I'm getting hungry, so for day eight I hit Concord to see if any of the houses I haven't looted yet have food in them. No luck. But I did find a lot of valuable oil and lead. Great for making ammunition, fuel and what not.
With all this extra oil I can finally make myself a motorbike. Not that I need it just yet, but it looks cool sitting there in the Red Rocket workshop. ;-) What this does is unlocks fast travel to other settlements. The motorbike itself doesn't go anywhere though, so you need to build one at each settlement you want to be able to fast travel out from. Not ideal I guess, but it's still a nice legit way to have travel despite regular fast travel being locked out in Survival mode. You need to use fuel in order to travel as well, which is manufactured at the drug workshop using oil.
I decide to hit the old trucking business ruins near the farm to see if they had any food there.
I killed my first ghouls. The scary part was when a Feral Ghoul Roamer appeared. I have to admit, I could have died if it hadn't been blocked off by my dog. I was using the laser musket I picked up in Concord for the regular ghouls. One double loaded burst would take them out easily. But a Roamer just shrugs it off. If it had been on me that would have been it. Just a reminder to myself that I've removed all the "safety features" as it were with my mods. Even in "newbie zone" places like this a relatively high level monster can appear. Sure, maybe not a glowing one, but top tier stuff within their category that would otherwise be capped out due to my level. Gotta be more careful.
Empty handed, I'm forced to buy a bit of food from Abernathy farm. I wear my Militia hat to score a little bit better of a deal with the charisma bonus, but it still hurts. I really suck at trading. Heading home, I finish the last few gaps in the town wall, and then get to work on using all the copper I've found recently for extending a power network. Eventually I'll have each of the buildings in town properly lit (the living areas anyway, the bedrooms can make do with lanterns or something).
Adding a few platforms by the walls for future turret defense gets me to level eight.
I go with charisma. This might seem like a strange choice. Surely anything that helps me fight better is a massive priority? Well yes and no. Food and ammunition are scarce commodities. Ammunition later on especially. Running out of either can really put me in a tight spot. So with the way my game is modded out the economy side of things is pretty important for my survival. Boosting charisma doesn't just work towards unlocking the leadership perks and the ability to construct various trade stalls and set up supply lines. It also helps me get a better deal when trading right away. This will translate into more ammunition, and more food when I need it. When I really get out into the world every 308 round is going to count.
Just as I'm about to hit the hay a third settler turns up. This one has a modded pipe rifle with a scope, and a bit of actual armor. She immediately assigns herself to defense, which is cool. I gotta admit I actually
do feel safer with this person around watching the area from the guard stands. I'm hoping we won't have much in the way of raider attacks, but it's always a small possibility. And in the eventuality I can't rely much on the other dirt farmers. Good thing about these settlers incidentally, is that they often have some food on them that I can take, like roasted squirrel bits. Really helpful right now.
It has been eight days since I left the vault, and yet still I am alive.
-------------
Thoughts: Sanctuary is really coming along nicely. It's a funny thing, but it makes a psychological difference knowing that I have walls around me. A gate. Guards. Guns. Tomorrow I'll probably grab some gears and oil from Red Rocket and set up a bunch more turrets, spaced out on the perimeter evenly. Then a little more cleaning up inside some of the houses, a few more beds and some furniture added, and we are done for a bit.
I picked up the .308 round pipe rifle in concord a few days back. Now that I have rounds for it and the shotgun I've swapped over to them. My thinking is a three gun rule. My pistol, something for closer range (either an assault rifle, machine gun, unscoped laser rifle, or shotgun), and a scoped rifle. I'll swap out weapons depending on what I have the most ammunition for. Basically, running around with six or seven guns on my back is not something I should really be capable of doing. Plus, as my carry weight actually is pretty low, rationalizing what I'm using instead of bringing it all with me will help later when looting.
I'm still looking forward to going to the diner, but on the other hand it is a little bit scary. Not only do I have to figure out how to safely take out the punks threatening the diner owner, I have to watch out for a camp of raiders nearby. Super Mutants are also known to spawn in that general area! I'll have to really keep a sharp look out and make use of my two levels of the sneak perk.
Finally, as a level 8, and wielding a decently modded 10mm and a basic 308 rifle, I'm starting to feel like I can take on a bigger range of targets, especially if I get the drop on them for the sneak damage bonus. The trouble with any fight with raiders is that it is unpredictable. Even a low level raider can kill me with a well placed round or two. And Raider Psychos will be super dangerous even when I'm level 20. The most important thing for me to do as I start to move out into the wider wasteland is to avoid fighting anything that shoots back unless I absolutely have a good reason, and can control the terms of engagement.
Oh yeah, and it might be a few days till the next update in this diary. I'll be too busy to play for a while I think. Looking forward to it though!
