Companions not attacking

Is there a way to maybe dfhack my companions to attack. Everytime I attack someone now my companions just follow and watch. They don't engage at all. Is this a bug?

Are you sneaking?  Or wrestling the enemy?  Sometimes they chill back when I'm in sneak or wrapping myself around the victim like a rope.

Nope, I even attacked and then moved out of the way. They aren't even saying "this is my fight too" like they used to

 the thing is who are you attacking? some times it a world gen probably punching a companion's brother thing.
like I kinda find companions as people to tag along to make trips not lonely than literal armymen that you can order to murder.
also dfhacking people to attack each other while doable is pretty tricky to pull off.
also some companions if you recruit them via musical group offer will just run away than join in to fight.

then again they could also NOT see the foe since this game has vision cones on every unit.

in my experience creatures do not have sound detection, as they do not turn toward the sounds of a scuffle. What rumrusher said is p likely, he just isn't looking the right direction when you start a fight.
