... man, let me just say. If they actually pull off a proper AoS style game that's not a goddamn dota derivative, I... I could actually get behind this pretty hard. Like, the development of a game that has that sort of single/small number of units influencing a massive battle thing that's the core of AoS style gameplay that most of the commercial ones have been pissing on for the last good long while is something I've been frankly near willing to kill for since WC3 days.

It would definitely be a significant departure from the previous games, and it probably wouldn't near scratch any number of Warhammer itches I'd kinda' rather see scratched, but... at the same time, an actual full on integration of the general AoS design aesthetic into a game that's not still (acting like it is) stuck up the ass of WC3's engine is something I've been wanting to see for a real damn long time. I could stand losing a grand scale/more traditional RTS or whathaveyou for that. Would definitely prefer it, y'know. Not be done using the DoW franchise name, but... still. Still.

E: Now, do I think that's actually going to happen? ... no. No, I'd say it's pretty damn unlikely. If it did, though...

*sigh* Sometimes I hate being right.

That article makes me want to pistol whip the dev.

That article reminds me of what happened with Diablo 3, and how the dev tried to explain the art style by saying it'd be hard to see enemies on the screen if they weren't neon coloured or something. What a load of crap.

So, Dawn of War 3's brighter, more cartoony art style had me a little worried at first. But I get the trade-off: by switching the game's look, Relic is able to create a gameplay feel that's more modern, that's more in-line with the expectations of the millions who play MOBAs every day. It's a design decision.

Oh dear.

Welp.

Gotta cater to the LoL crowd boys. Bring out the Adobe AIR client!
Literally every game I know of that used AIR (all...2 of them) has either planned to or has dumped adobe air by now, I'd assumed the platform is dead. Is league of angry internet people actually still using it?

And also, making another hero brawler(-like) is not how you get people excited for the return of DoW. Its how you murder all the interest in it from people who jsut want a new bloody rts.

I like how you guys are immediately equating a visual style with a complete shift in gameplay. The equivalent of saying new Civ will play like AoE online simply because it has a similar aesthetic.

Do you realise how silly that is?

While the style might be up my alley, or something I'd expect from a 40k game, it's completely understandable why they'd go for stylized visual simplicity in order to give greater clarity as to what the hell is going on.

Also about the no sync-kills comment, do you have that confirmed by the devs somewhere or are you judging how the finished product will look like over what's clearly alpha gameplay footage?

No. But looking at their comments to make it more "responsive", faster and cleaner, including the lower quality of models, so you dont want to zoom in, with the videos we have, its very possible  there will not be kill moves like in old DoW games.

Considering they are moving from dawn of war 2's much smaller squad/unit scale, to Dawn of Wars many more units with actual bases.. They might want to make it so that most people can play it without it burning their graphics card ya?

Also I still can't believe people are complaining about the art style, what is it with people nitpicking anything that isn't gritty and brown lately? I almost wish they had used the Imperial Fists Bright Yellow color scheme just to see people's reaction.

Supcom did pretty well with a fair bit of detail and lots of units.

Not when it came out it didn't. And I'd say there's a bit of a difference between armies consisting mostly of humanoids which need to animate properly and tanks and a handful of mechs which are easy to animate in comparison.

Yeah, because that argument hasn't been stale as fuck for the last 8 years. And considering "gritty" is part of 40k's description, the shift to an even lower detail and brighter/more colorful palette flies in the face of how people expect the IP to present itself.

They've furnished plenty of statements, images and gameplay video already at this point to confirm what everyone believes. When you start dropping MOBA references to explain how your new RTS is going to play, it's not a monumental leap of fucking logic to believe that it's going to have gameplay you don't want.

DoW 2 was a shift from an actual core RTS, and this is even going even further. Oh, so I can drop three buildings and build some turrets? That ain't base building.  That is like 2 more deployables than DoW 2. It's a weak attempt to try and get people who want an actual RTS to buy their MOBA.

I'm not bitter about the kill animations going away. But it's being done because they're, again, taking the focus off your units so you can play Hero Ability Masturbation Simulator.

Because let's be honest: why is "responsiveness" important in any context except MP? I don't buy DoW games so I can play MP. I play it for a good, evocative, immersive SP with enjoyable RTS mechanics. This ain't that. That's why the DOW 2 campaign sucked ass. It was designed as a grindable after thought before, they hoped, you'd just start playing MP. Fuck, the boss fights in DOW 2's campaign was training for MP. I hate SP campaigns that are there because they're expected to be, to "teach" you about MP.

I like that description of it. You even can shorten it to HAMS.

Yes, and DoW 1 had kill moves also 10 fucking years ago and they burned all GPUs and Cpus.. Lol, yea, thats not correct.

And normally that people will complain about art style and graphics. If you make cartoony crap that has nothing to do with both DoW 1 and DoW 2, people will complain, if you downgraded graphics compared to DoW 2 to make it more clean an appeal to MOBa population  people will complain, and they should. It even worries me that all the gameplay we saw, the number of units is not exactly huge, and not yet close to the number we had with actual DoW 1 game. And this is all from promotion  and heavy scripted materials of best part of the game for marketing.

There are a lot of warning bells ringing from the direction the game is going, and very bad comments of developers what they are trying to do

Meh. The Last Stand was really popular for a while, people are actually still playing it and a lot of players have bought the dlc characters for that. If they're learning from The Last Stand and improving on that, I'd be fine with it

So we're once again ignoring what they said they wanted to do with the gameplay in favour of kneejerk and wild conjecture? Ok, consider me out then, you have fun wallowing in that sour drink of yours, I'll be over here waiting for a concrete confirmation in a form of actual gameplay before calling it a filthy mobalike.

Also miljan, it's not just performance, it's also clarity, and cost, and a fucking alpha so of course it's going to look shittier than the previous complete products. But once again, sure, ignore whatever they say because they're lying scumbags who secretly want to sell you a filthy casual moba game.

Honestly, I wish they didn't release anyithing this early, would've saved a lot of jimmies from being rustled really.
