"Curiosity is the womb of treachery"

I wonder if it will continue the DoW2/CoH2 style of micromanaging few squads or it will go the massive armies route.

Wait, people are asking for more base building? Why? Why would you ask for more base horse shit to manage? Unless you have base building that's as nuanced as something like Stronghold, then the more of that that's taken out of your hands and automated the better.

I wonder what the chances are that they'll return to basebuilding. Would be a nice reversion from DoWII.

Base building seemed kinda weird to me in a 40k games. I liked the Men of War approach where you call in units from off-map instead of creating unit factories on-map. Seems much more likely to happen in a war zone (not to mention it's less crap you have to manage).

In any case, apparently on the source code of the page is this

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

But that's why I have faith instead.

Because it turns out small unit tactics apeing mobas suck ass as the only point of gameplay.

I'd honestly like a CoH approach to base building, a compromise between the first and second DoW really. Where the buildings are very few in number but it still matters which and when you build them. Having it all in a single building was rather limiting in both the number of strategies and the number of units, since economy was tied to the map to such an extent that guerilla strikes at their productions were pointless.

Tho having it a big and sprawling mass of things isn't always too great either because then it kinda matters less what you build for the most part and the path is always barracks-tech-vehicles-etc.

Either way, knowing Relic they'll be trying something new and fancy again, so we're in for a ride, regardless of what it turns out like, I doubt it'll be boring.

Is that rocky formation shown on the website supposed to be that crater on Cyrene where Kyras was defeated?

I liked DoWI's basebuilding, if only because I prefer being able to plan and place things in an RTS. Perhaps less fucking useless buildings, though...

The two things I crave:

-Bigger unit cap, please. I'll take fewer lovingly rendered figs if it means we can put more on the screen and have bigger battles.

-Better terrain destruction. Company of Heroes was bloody amazing in this regard. Dawn of War 1 was ok if not super great. DoW 2, terrain changes of any kind were either non-existent or 100% scripted.

Who is even behind this anyways? Is it still Relic's baby or has Sega quietly farmed out the franchise to another dev house?

Yeah vanilla CoH basically got everything right, there hasn't been a RTS as good as it since it came out.

I am disappointed in the blandness of the thread title. Suggestion: Dawn of War 3: Boreale's Revenge

Ninja (by Nenjin): Does SEGA even own any RTS-specialized studios besides Relic?

That's my point. Popping abilities like I'm playing Diablo is not fun. The unit management aspect needs to change and evolve too. If it goes back to DoW1 base building then it's just like turning a light switch off and on again. If you sit in the dark for long enough then exploring the room when the lights turn on is pretty exciting, for a couple minutes, until you realize it's still the same room. Nothing actually changed. You should play Men of War with someone who's got some experience, that game has zero base building, and it would make you understand that there is such a thing as an RTS with no buildings or eco that has nuanced gameplay.

E: When it comes to RTS, Men of War is the peak of micromanagement. It throws out all the trusses and makes it so that the only thing you need to think about is making gains on the battlefield. Stronghold is on the opposite end of the spectrum and is just as perfect, and it's probably the only game that isn't a "crafting" game that has seriously fun base building (like Factorio) that makes you feel creative. You set up the perfect fortress according to the resources available to you in order to fulfill the goals of the scenario, and it's amazing. You spend all of your time thinking and planning your eco and crafting your home to resist invaders (if the scenario even HAS invaders).

There's examples of stuff in between that do interesting things, like Company of Heroes, Supreme Commander, Planetary Annihilation. Maybe Dawn of War III can do something special, but I feel like that's a step backwards from what they did with DoW2.

Did CoH have good terrain deformation? Last I checked terrain didn't matter anyways.

Yeah, I tried DoW 2's demo and the game was fun for a bit, but... it just felt like a game where you just micro'd squads around to dodge grenades while also pushing all the abilities that were off cooldown, rather than an actual strategy game. This feeling peaked when I apparently fought an Ork "Boss" - apparently it involves microing your units to dodge his attacks. There was no actual strategy at all.
