Well, does he use ranged weapons, or is he just wise in his trade, knowing things like animal care, salves for farm based wounds, balancing feed, and cooking food?

He could very well be an alchemist, considering what farmers do.

It's going to be a female, and alchemist was one of the options. Ranger was out of the animal care thing and also the possibility of knowing how to hunt to supplement the family's food supplies. Could argue Warrior if they used a spear or something with the justification "it's shaped like a pitchfork".
