The church is typically good, providing people with food, drinking water, jobs, as well as healing, and other basic necessities. Many people gain debts with the Church, but this is easily paid off by working for the church. They tend to be very lenient.

Wait, so is the Church evil or not? You're giving conflicting information here. If they're not evil, and if they don't do unspeakable things in basements, then my entire character concept of an alcoholic monk falls out the window.

What reasons would someone have to voluntarily go to the Frostfell Wastes? What's there that someone would want?

It's less a desire of want, more a desire of the reasons you went to the Church for a job in the first place. Some are because of debt, others because of service. It can be what ever you want, just make it creative. You could even be an prisoner using the church for a new start.

And why does the Church want to go out into the Wastes?

So, for character ideas I have a couple. Posting them for opinions and for Sanure to say if they work or not. Might come up with more ideas later.

A character from a noble line with way, way too many kids (as in, the family has to many kids, not the character) with the next head of the family decided by who does the greatest deeds. Character is hoping to do one such deed in the wastes. This would add a city/town and a noble family to the lore (maybe a new country if succession such as this doesn't work in the main one), along with the possibility of coming across one of the character's many brothers and sisters trying the same thing they are. Note "great" in this case means "important". Not necessarily good. This character would likely be either a Warrior or Guardian.

Person from a small farming town (complete with stereotype country accent, or at least as close to that as I can write) who's mentor was for some reason supposed to go the Frostfell wastes, and the character went in their place because the mentor had been recently crippled. Probably a Warrior or Alchemist.

Truth, It's a front for their evil behavior. Church is going to the wastes for: to clear out problematic monsters so that the Esbel royal forces can sweep into the land and conquer it under the guise of aiding the land.

Ranger, due to Dex being the preferred Stat. Then just put your job down as say, Thief (for fluff). This will grant you all the skills that use Dex as the main stat (so ranged damage, backstab, etc)
