PC Freezing Problems
« on: April 22, 2016, 05:01:54 pm »

I have a computer that's less than a year old, I built it myself, and very recently it's been freezing up a lot, usually while playing games but once or twice it's happened while I was browsing Waterfox. I think it's because of overheating but I'm not sure. I downloaded SpeedFan and checked my temp after playing games and it's usually in the neighborhood of 50 Celsius (122 Fahrenheit) but sometimes close to 55c. Could this be the cause?

E: When it freezes it does so permanently and I'm forced to turn the computer off and back on, usually, but other times it recovers.

These are my specs:
Win 10 64-bit
AMD FX-6300 6-Core Processor 3.50 GHz, x64
RAM 8 GB
AMD Radeon R9 200 Series GPU

50C is nothing, in general the rules for most computers is to try to keep it well under 80-90C at all costs (though most computers won't actually start to fail until the 110-130C range). Whatever you've got happening is almost certainly not an overheating problem. The things I'd probably check in order are:
1) Check drivers
2) Try running the repair installation option with your Win 10 repair disk
3) Make sure everything is plugged in; could be you have a loose RAM module or something that is wiggling around and causing restarts.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Might also try http://www.memtest86.com/ if everything else doesn't resolve your problem, to see if you've got a shaky memory module.

I recently got a Lenovo laptop (Ideapad 300) with windows 10.  It also freezes most often when playing certain games.

edit: by chance, what antivirus do you happen to be running?

Have you had to forcibly shut it down at all, or has it ever not shut down properly, say, because of a power fluctuation or outrage?

If so you may want to check the file system for problems.

That's a relief.

I checked and my drivers are up to date.
To be clear the computer isn't restarting on it's own, it freezes and then I'm forced to turn it off and turn it back on.

I made an .iso using my USB but I have no idea where to go from there. On a cursory search there don't seem to be any tuts on youtube.

Windows Defender, but I've had others on this computer before.

Whenever it freezes I hard reset using the power button on the front panel. When I first got it I didn't have the female power cord plugged in all the way and it was shutting down here and there but eventually I noticed that and fixed it. That might have borked the files here and there? I'm going to try Win10 repair in a bit here.
