Author Topic: Undead path to edge of map if no other targets available (Reduce FPS Death)  (Read 439 times)

One major cause of FPS death of fortresses in reanimating biomes is that (40.X and later) undead no longer know how to reliably path into a fort, even if there's an open path. This is especially critical in the caverns, where any dead will eventually reanimate, kill newly arrived creatures, and multiply until the game becomes unplayable from the accumulation of undead.

Maybe this could be mitigated by changing the pathfinding rules for undead. If an undead goes without a target for a sufficient amount of time, find a path to the map edge that allows the undead to leave. (An exception should be forgotten beast undead, which are probably worth keeping on the map.)

That way there's a chance the map will eventually clean itself up when the undead aren't finding anything to kill, especially in unrevealed or sealed off cavern areas.
