A friendly troll. What?
« on: April 16, 2016, 06:32:06 pm »

See anything odd in that screenshot? Yes that is right. It is a troll in the fortress.

Now the weird part is he is just standing there and the dwarves are not scared of him at all. He might as well be a somewhat angry looking fur statue.

Any suggestions on what I should do with this friendly troll who doesn't seem to want to move?

Any interpretations as to what happened that makes this troll a dwarf friendly troll?

Edit: Maybe the type of troll who uses words instead of violence to troll people? lol

Edit2: He just moved a tile to the right?

He is an outpost liaison, or diplomat, or some other world_genned historical figure of your civilization?

He seems to be just an ordinary troll. Let me show:

He also appears to be completely naked:

Yeah he is smashing the doors it seems. But shouldn't dwarves be running away from it in any case?

Edit: I tried to put up a wall around him but he smashes the walls immediately after the initial construction lol. I got 1 wall to work though

Edit2: He appears to to only destroy walls in positions 7913 on the num pad. (Diagonal)  Could be something else, but I tried rebuilding a door a 3 tiles away from the troll, but it gets instantly destroyed. it is on the same diagonal though. 3 tiles in the 1 direction (num pad). Isn't the range of building destroyers 2 tiles?

Edit3: Decided to just kill it and be done with that troll. what a really weird situation. Dwarves don't run away from it and all it seems to care about is breaking doors.

Yeah I've been having friendly trolls too. They just mill about the fortress, occasionally smashing workshops. The dwarves don't seem to care about the troll but sometimes pets seem to be frightened.

I was going to let one stay but then he smashed the leather working shop my tanner was mooding in. Tanner went beserk and tried to beat the troll up. Tanner didn't win that fight to say the least.

Since dwarven fear has been reworked they aren't as scared of trolls as they once were, and trolls are no longer as completely hostile due to their sentience.

Have our Sedge Trolls...

The stench in the hovel was overpowering; something loathsome was cooking. Occasionally something surfaced in the thick paste, but my host would casually push it down before I could make out what it was.

become Hedge Trolls?

His abode was clean and bare, not a morsel in sight. I asked him what he ate, fearing the answer. He smiled and said his faith alone sustained him.

Since updating emotions, the problem is not the dwarves scared of trolls, the problem is of trolls scared of dwarves. Or anything, really. In my last gob-siege, one of the troll was playing with a cat (he threw the cat up and impaled it mid-air on his horn). His colleague, other troll, saw this and was instantly scared (overcome by terror). And this is very common with trolls. They are scared even of their own atrocities, not to mention usual corpses or injuries. I saw trolls seeing something dying, by the hand of their master goblins, and fleeing the map because of this.

In v.040.x my adventurer killed over 1000 of them in the dark fortress - most were too scared to move, none resisted. The trolls are pussies, and probably they are used in that role by goblins (i.e. as pet-cats). So when I see a non-aggressive troll I'm not surprised. What is surprising that dwarves are not moved by this. They should be at least "interrupted". But I saw dwarves reacting very late to danger, as if they saw it at the last moment. Maybe they are not very… observant?

If you use dfhack, you may check what civ this troll belongs to. Also, where it comes from? There are wild trolls in the caverns.

I actually like this. I imagine trolls as being sentient, but very stupid, and as a result they get scared even by their own strength.

Sometimes magma crabs and blind cave ogres will wander in and hang out. Better to leave them alone.

Not really, they smash your doors. Executing them with a horde of trained axedwarves is preferable, or sealing them out somehow.

I've seen this happen with some cavern creatures (notably a hungry head), but only when they killed a FB and got named, so that isn't the case with your troll.

Old thread, but for the courtesy of science in explaining unexplainable new sentience behaviour they have a full range of intelligent responses (which is a bug/unintentional directly referencing prior version) same thing happens in blind cave ogres which are reported to be completely non-hostile because they have no interactions with entity members in worldgen.

Trolls can become emotionally overloaded, fearful & aggressive by how the player reacts, this is a troll with no opinion of dwarves, but set a militia on it and suddenly dwarves & the troll will become hostile.

This sounds so sweet and adorable. I am thinking of a big woolly troll just sitting in in the dwarves' fort. He's trying to pull apart a door, but can't do it. The dwarves walk by and leave the little guy alone. Some even build walls for him to play with. He tears them apart gleefully like a little kid. He is just a nice innocent troll.
