So, some craziness is going on with Steam updates right now, it seems like it is deleting _CommonRedist_ folders and redownloading them: for every friggin' game that uses them. Thankfully that seems to be only thing that is happening, as I've not seen any real reports of malware or anything like that, but I thought it would probably a good idea to make a thread to keep people updated. You can still access your games from the folder by the way, no clue if some games are broken by this or not however on my end they seem to work. Regardless, don't log into Steam just in case this turns out to be something much worse.


Edit General compilation of information so far: Your games are fine. Steam is just acting weird and if you put the updates on pause there shouldn't be problems.

 Also, it appears some people are having trouble downloading things, and the wishlist feature is down for some. Saw repeated reports of this on the Steam forums, might be fixed, might not.

Huh, just looked at my steam library and yes, a bunch of games are blue'd out, and looking at my download queue reveals all my installed games have been updating while I wasn't looking. Trying to launch Rocket League caused it to go to the downloading screen for a minute then launched normally. I restarted steam afterwards and now it's downloading something for Rocket League again. Wonder what's going on.

So, my theory is that Steam may finally be bundling major redistributables (DirectX, OpenAL, etc.) as part of the Steam client install

 You certainly can log in, just you'll probably want to pause all of the things. I'm just saying that it is probably a better idea to just log out and run whatever game you want to play from the folder if the game allows (which some don't.) Also, this is the closest thing to an official response I could find.

Oh good, I'm not the only one that thought something possibly bad might be going on. If it is I already had several games update.

Mine doesn't seem to be doing this. I've been logged in since yesterday, though.

E: searching steam\steamapps\common for _CommonRedist_ isn't finding anything so maybe I just don't have any of those games installed, by some stroke of luck

Huh, didn't even notice that Steam was doing that. Downloaded a bunch of stuff for about 12 games.

I had five games queued up for updating.  Four of them actually updated files, one declared it was ready after downloading 0 bytes.

As described, all of the downloaded files were in _CommonRedist folders.  I compared the files against my backup, they were all identical.

So I'm not particularly worried.

(A whole lot of files did change in the OpenVR tools, but I figure that's unrelated.)

Meanwhile, I get 55 games in the queue. They seem to be working fine, though.

They're queued up twice?  Or they finish and then are added again?

Maybe try verifying the files on a few of the games.  Right-Click the name in the game list, choose Properties, choose the third tab 'Local Files' in the popup, choose the last button 'Verify Integrity of Game Cache'.  You should get a second popup showing progress.  (It often hides behind the main popup.)

Then close/reopen Steam entirely, and see if the games were removed from the queue.  Might work, might not.

That's so weird. Steam says I have 151 games. Why isn't it happening to me? (I'm not saying it's not happening to you, just... it's weird, you know?)

55 of my 300 installed games have decided to be hit by this, mostly old indie ones. Just as well I switched to an uncapped broadband plan a couple of months ago as it's already downloaded 12 GB of data.

So, this still going for people? I want to know before I redownload all of this junk, having it make me download it again would be rather annoying.
