Happy, fun ways to deal with overpopulation
« on: April 12, 2016, 08:31:08 pm »

I get massive populations rather quickly, and I need some interesting ideas to curb overpopulation before the immigrant pleb dwarves hog all of the food and starve the important dwarves.

...Or maybe before the filthy noble dwarves starve off the important immigrant dwarves, depending on your views of nobility.

Anyhoo. My farms are at 100% capacity and the local ostrich population seems to have been hunted to extinction by my own dwarves. I just finished a massive tomb deep underneath my fortress that is capable of holding somewhere near 500 dwarves, and my population is 236. The game is lagging relatively hard and I need to drastically reduce the population to something like 50-100.

1. Build staircase tower (pref. above your dining hall or somesuch)
2. Build retracting bridge on top of the tower
3. Order useless dwarves onto the bridge
4. Retract the bridge and watch in amusement as dwarves rain down upon their fellows and scatter gibs everywhere

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

1) Train a massive army, centered around spears and hammers.
2) Visit the circus.

Or, alternatively,

1) Train a massive army, centered around spears and hammers.
2) Order some of them to attack the dwarven caravan.

Edit: Important note, if you go for the second method be sure to squirrel away dwarves you'd actually like to save, and have some way to kill anyone who survives that doesn't involve dwarves or their animals.

I'll answer this the same way I did last time someone asked.

1) Mod in winged helmets.
2) Enlist all females as your properly armored army.  Assign winged helmets.
3) Enlist all males as your sacrifice army.  Assign them only a robe and no weapon.
4) Send Armok's sacrifices into the underground.  Never recover the bodies, just engrave slabs.
5) Next attack, play Wagner very loud while your Valkyrie army kicks butt.

BTW, the INI file has a population cap to prevent this, and you can change it at any time.

If a forgotten beast arena isn't a happy and fun way to deal with overpopulation, then you're doing something wrong.

Also, to reduce overpopulation in the future, put children in dwarven daycare, and migrants through boot camp. Even if they are cheesemakers. Especially if they are cheesemakers.

Dig out a room (or a ditch on the surface), build a big bridge in it, make a burrow for about 50-100 of your soap makers, lye makers, and nobles to go under it, and just fucking smash them all.

Bonus points if you make the bridge out of soap and kill all the soap makers with it.
Even more points if the guy who pulls the lever to smash everyone is the guy who made the soap bridge, and is also under the bridge with them.

Use dwarves to distract the magma crabs while paving over the lava ocean.

Bonus points if you create a dwarven rum bowling alley for your dwarves to run down.  You only get a "strike" when all 10 barrels explode.

Build a giant pyramid for sacrifices, with magma and whatnot.

It should keep your population in check if the building process doesn't.

So many wasted lives... Let them serve science as Magmanauts! (that's where you dump unwanted dwarves into the magma sea)

How does one go about 'ordering dwarves onto the bridge'?

Define a burrow on the bridge. Or assign dwarves in a squad and station them on the bridge.

For me, the second way is usually faster.
