Any sieges in the last year?
« on: April 11, 2016, 02:50:51 pm »

Hi,

When version 0.4x came out last year after 0.34 I remember siege not working anymore. There was some talk about the whole siege system having been change to appear more realistic or something, but after 6 fortress played for 5 years each by min maxing and having a shitton of wealth and not one single siege, ambush or anything besides some wandering forgotten beast, titan or werecreature I got bored out of my mind and took a break from DF.

So are frequent sieges back in the game or are goblins still turning the other cheek?

Yes and no...

The change was that sieges came from somewhere (rather than teleporting out of the void) and actually went to your fortress. This meant they might target something closer instead. They also reclaim sites in the two weeks between embark and reaching the embark, which means the 10000 goblin fortress closest to you might get replaced by a 40 goblin site even closer in the mean time. The bug, which caused invaders to fail to find their way to your fortress has been fixed in 0.42.X, though.
If you crave invaders, I'd recommend a pocket world where there is little risk of something getting in between you and the invader, or embarking right next to a big goblin site. Use Legends Mode (possibly exported and viewed with Legends Viewer) to determine which sites are strong and which are just barely holding together.
Pocket world are very poor at providing the visitors new to 0.42.X (1 total over half a dozen worlds) due to the sorry state of non goblin civs.
I 0.40.24 I frequently got goblin sieges ½-2 times a year after the initial build up, despite the pathing bug in pocket worlds (while many complained about not getting any, so I think my sieges were largely due to the pocket size and at least some amount of site selection).

Thus, examine your worlds carefully before embarking to ensure the features you want are likely to appear (visitors, goblin sieges, caravans, black tower sieges (recently nerfed), etc). Spend time on world and embark selection.

For sure. PatrikLundell beat me to it but yeah. You have to take a few steps to ensure that you have some aggressive neighbours. Being at war helps but is not strictly necessary. There are also some new invader caps you can play with. It isn't unusual to see sieges of 60+ gobbos+beakdogs+trolls pretty early into the game actually.

Undead have also been debuffed and I think they're survivable now.

My current embark is within spitting distance of two goblin civs, at least one of which I'm at war with. Around midway through year 2 a 300+ strong siege showed up, though they got bored pretty quickly.

I have had a few sieges during my current 42.06 fortress life (+10 years), but in the last 2 years i got some very strange events :

4 times there was "A vile force of darkness has arrived", signaling a goblin siege.
The game pause, i see a few gobs on the map border as usual.
I unpause and they all disappear, there's no more SIEGE mention on the upper left part of the screen.

And after a few seconds, the game pause again, and i see a gob snatcher, that after unpausing obviously run away

4 times in 2 years it happened exactly the same : the sieger all disappear and few seconds later a gob snatcher is spotted and run out of the map, that's too much in my opinion to be only coincidence and my fortress is too old and populated for gobs to ignore it and bypass like it can happen in early years

So i wonder if there's some kind of bug happening, with 2 events at the same time : the siege coming and the snatcher coming, with one preventing the other to function.
Anyone noticed something similar ?

Yeah, there something weird going on with early 'sieges'. They appear before you reach the population trigger (goblin wealth triggers are turned off in 42.x) and if you scout around, you can sometimes find a thief or snatcher lurking about if you're fast enough. Usually though, they just appear then dissapear.

Snatchers apparently come with friends for backup, so I guess they're triggering the siege warning by mistake. Then, just like kobolds, then run away having been 'discovered'.

So, wait until you get population 80, hostile goblin neighbors should turn up within the year if they're not busy attacking other places around you .

Alternatively, edit entity.txt, change the goblin siege triggers to 1 for population and wealth. You'll get goblins pretty quickly (most of the time).
Adding [AMBUSHER] might help add some early small attacks too (although wiki is totally ambiguous on what that actually does).

I got that recently, near end of 5th year. The vile force of darkness for the first time! Two or three gobbos escaped before I could say "hello", two more climbed the tree, immediately climbed down and ran away. Seconds later a snatcher (also first one) was discovered in another area, he also ran away. My soldiers stationed in the depot, but before they surfaced the siege was over. Technically the siege was over even before the last of goblin recruits climbed down the tree, and before the snatcher was discovered.

However, this isn't an "early" fortress. I had a couple of regular undead sieges before, semi- and megabeasts, and, couple of years back, even kobold thieves. Also, I have a military which could wipe out the gobbos if necessary, and over 100 inhabitants, including some 20 long-term residents. But this winter of 5th year is the first time a live gobbos showed up, and also a moment the gob civ appeared in the list, in addition to kobold, elven, dwarven and human. It shows that humans are at war with dwarves, while gobbos are at war with elves and dwarves. Maybe the goblins were busy somewhere else?

ive had about 3 sieges this IRL year but i havent been playing df much.
ive seen people getting sieged recently though i cant be sure if they are playing the newest version.

if you really want sieges you could try mods, ive heard of the fortress defense mod, i think it makes sieges come harder and more often though ive personally never used it.

you could also mod the game yourself if you know what your doing, that way you could tweak it so you get just the right amount of siege

Yeah, and wait at least another 2 years before giving up.
Try generate another world if necessary.

Been seeing awful lack of sieges even with rich forts. Post-adamantine, even. One fort now even died down to 2FPS, and was retired, after a stupid mistake involving me thinking it was safe to pasture some dog puppies, but somehow pathing killed the fort after I did so.

wealth does not influence sieges according to the raws, but you can mod them to have your wealth and trading count toward the gobs wanting to siege you
Quote
you can open the file
entity_default.txt
in the raws/objects/ folder

In the [ENTITY:MOUNTAIN] (that define the dwarves entities), look for
Quote
   [PROGRESS_TRIGGER_POP_SIEGE:3]
   [PROGRESS_TRIGGER_PROD_SIEGE:0]
   [PROGRESS_TRIGGER_TRADE_SIEGE:0]

This is what controls the goblin siege
By default , it means that goblin are willing to siege you at +/- 80 population ( PROGRESS_TRIGGER_POP_SIEGE:3 )
But your production and trading wealth has no bearing on their willingness to siege ( PROGRESS_TRIGGER_PROD_SIEGE:0 and PROGRESS_TRIGGER_TRADE_SIEGE:0  basically means both triggers are disabled)

For the values, the pop_siege trigger :
Quote
A value of 0 disables the trigger. 1 corresponds to 20 dwarves, 2 to 50 dwarves, 3 to 80, 4 to 110, and 5 to 140.

the prod siege trigger
Quote
A value of 0 disables the trigger. 1 corresponds to 5000☼ created wealth, 2 to 25000☼, 3 to 100000☼, 4 to 200000☼, and 5 to 300000☼.

the trade siege trigger
Quote
A value of 0 disables the trigger. 1 corresponds to 500☼ exported wealth, 2 to 2500☼, 3 to 10000☼, 4 to 20000☼, and 5 to 30000☼.

So according to this, to increase the challenge against gob siege, you may want to change
Quote
   [PROGRESS_TRIGGER_POP_SIEGE:3]
   [PROGRESS_TRIGGER_PROD_SIEGE:0]
   [PROGRESS_TRIGGER_TRADE_SIEGE:0]

Quote
   [PROGRESS_TRIGGER_POP_SIEGE:1]
   [PROGRESS_TRIGGER_PROD_SIEGE:1]
   [PROGRESS_TRIGGER_TRADE_SIEGE:1]

So gobs may be willing to siege when
- you reach 20 pop
- or you reach 5000¤ of created wealth
- or you reach 500¤ of exported wealth

Meaning that instead of +/- waiting 3 years to reach pop 80 for a goblin siege to really come (and so be very prepared with strong enough by the time military to destroy them all), you may be able to be sieged by the 1st year.

You need probably a new world to be generated for that, or at least edit your save own raws and hope this can of change will be taken in account on your existing game.

Unless you are extremely lucky it is very rare to have sieges before year 3. Most likely you will have to wait two or three years after first achieving the siege requirements for enemies to attack. If you encounter sieges that immediately leave due to being revealed by a bug involving snatchers or whatever, you should take that as a positive sign as at least the goblins are attempting to invade you.

If you want more guaranteed sieges, you need to install more enemy civs. The Fortress Defense Mod provides a bunch of enemy civs while keeping the experience otherwise the same as vanilla.

Hm. They don't come as early, but once they start showing up they're fairly consistent, though in my last fort there was a long stretch of peace.

Ironically, it was a loyalty cascade that decimated the fort that seemed to coincide with the return of the sieges. I wonder if that's a factor...if your military is "strong" enough the goblins decide it isn't worth the effort. Though intuitively I don't think that's the case...

Adding [AMBUSHER] might help add some early small attacks too (although wiki is totally ambiguous on what that actually does).

Adding back the ambusher tag will cause a stupid amount of goblins to show up and very often. its been removed since 40.xx seeing as there was a limit on 2 ambusher squads at once. With the limit pretty much removed alot of goblins will show up quickly after you hit 80 pop or the other siege triggers.

If you want !!FUN!! just add the [AMBUSHER] tag back.

I forgot about the ambushers, that makes a very welcomed difference.

I can confirm adding the [AMBUSHER] tag to the goblin entity in the save own raws (entity_default.txt) does not require a new worldgen, it will work on your current world and fortress.
