Quests...
« on: April 08, 2016, 07:41:05 pm »

Upon spawning I was assigned a hearth-person quest, which basically amounted to, find and kill this specific troll...

I am immediately sidetracked by shenanigans...

...

Hours later I notice the troll quest under the (a)greements tab of the (Q)uests screen...

Convinced that my character is prepared to take this challenge on, I decide to start the quest...

Problem is, I can't remember where the Troll's lair was, and the only thing the (Q)uests screen tells me is to kill <insert tediously long title> the Troll...

So, I figure that all I need to do is go back to the lord who appointed me this duty and have him remind me where to go...

However, it would seem that not only the lord, but everybody in his territory, have completely forgotten every detail about it...

...

Great...

Guess I'll just randomly wander the map until I happen upon it then...

...

Seriously though, are the interfaces for quests supposed to be this vague, counter-intuitive, and generally unhelpful, or am I just missing something?

That's quite strange, did you ask them the location of the beast by name?

I believe so, though maybe not to the extent they are now. Guides gotta eat.

Right after being given the quest, I'm assuming you also asked about the location. You can try opening your gamelog.txt and search using the name of said troll. That should do it.

...

<Ask about somebody>  =>  <Ask about the troll Kad Floodnegated The Locks of Joy>

You: "What can you tell me about the troll Kad Floodnegated The Locks of Joy?"

The Lord Tista Otngeostsi: "I don't know the troll Kad Floodnegated The Locks of Joy."

...

<Ask for directions>  =>  <Ask for the whereabouts of the troll Kad Floodnegated The Locks of Joy>

You: "Can you tell me where I can find the troll Kad Floodnegated The Locks of Joy?"

The Lord Tista Otngeostsi: "I don't know myself, and I don't know anyone that could tell you.""

...

<Give report pertaining to service as a hearthperson>

You: "I am your loyal hearthperson. The troll Kad Floodnegated The Locks of Joy will be slain."

The Lord Tista Otngeostsi: "I have confidence in your abilities."

...

Repeat that conversation, minus the report, twenty more times for everyone in his base, then about 50 more times for everyone (that I could find) inhabiting the surrounding hamlet...

Ah, very nice...

It appears that the troll I am looking for makes it's lair in a place called The Old Deep...

Thank you for the assist internet person...

O-kay...

There's nothing here...

...

The Old Deep appears to be nothing more than a modestly sized mound of muddy ice jutting out of the massive expanse of barren tundra that makes up about a fifth of my world...

The site is completely deserted except for a single donkey recruit, which is just kind of walking around in circles being a jackass...

...

How is this meant to work again?

I thought that my target would just kind of be here, or at least be wandering around in the general vicinity...

Do I just wait until something happens?

Okay one thing you need to understand when you play is that the DF world is ALIVE so the beasts have lairs, but they also do other things, like go off and hunt travellers, so yes, wait a while.

Also press 'K' to activate tracking, you should (if you are skilled enough) be able to see footprints and signs of its activity in the area. (eg you actually have to hunt it) follow those tracks or wait.. and look for asterisks on the map, if one comes close to the lair and disappears, and such, it is probably the beast. If it knows you are around it  may just hang out a littlle ways away.Stay within a few world map tiles (whch is actually a large area, I know) and perhaps approach the asterisks. Of course you could also track it if you are skilled enough or wait, since it will eventually come back(but if it knows you are around it may just hang out in the area around the lair) , I once waited like 4  in game days.... and I noticed an asterisk that periodically went on the other side of the river like clockwork every day (I actually also saw it the first day but thought nothing of it) , I finally decided, ill approach it and it actually was my target, it refused to come back to its lair when I was there, but it was nearby, waiting., as I said, you have many choices. But yeah they dont just hang out in their lairs)

Large predator beasts like trolls or giant versions of animals such as dingos, leopards or wolves, usually aren't found in their lairs - you'll more than likely see a blip around the lair itself. If you approach it, it should drop you into the world again with the message "Ambush!" and you'll probably see a "troll recruit" somewhere near. Megabeasts like giants and dragons, on the other hand, practically never wander out of their lair - I haven't seen any doing that, in any case.

Also, if you want to ask about locations, you have to go into "bring up specific incident or rumor" and type out the name of the beast you're assigned to hunt - it should show up as "spread rumor of Murderkiller the Murderer of Killers presence in Diecave" - your character will then talk about the troll and you can ask about the location afterwards.

I spent the best part of an hour staking out The Old Deep...

All I had managed to catch in that time was a couple dozen bandits, a bunch of undead, and two necromancers...

Unfortunately, these weren't the things I was looking for and so, thoroughly dejected, I starting making my way back to my Lord's base...

I ended up cutting through some scarcely-trodden patches of forest by the coast only to fall into an ambush shortly after...

Turns out my attackers were two trolls, one of which was Kad; I suppose he'd wandered considerably further north than I had anticipated...

It was a tough fight, but I managed to get away relatively unscathed, with Kad's messily decapitated head in hand...

Christ I am glad that is over, now onto the next...

...

Thanks to everyone for helping me through my first hunt...

-avatar-

Uhm.. exactly the reason I drew my own mark of Khorne.

On topic: Yeah, tasks/quests are indeed this vague. Way around that is to pay attention and find a guide/random person who knows places, someone who knows about the locations. I myself only got a minotuar's exact place from a goblin lasher/scout as the lord said that the minotaur was somewhere around the region only but not the location where he was.
