So I figured since the hard drive pooed out, maybe I could run linux off a flash drive and just use the hardware to see things?

Well, Im trying that.  I picked up a 64gigabyte drive and woo is me the darn computer running linux 'test' off a usb is not wanting to format the usb.

ffs.  Ill have to go sit down at a computer tomorrow and see if I cant format it there.

Im completely in the blank here with what to do, but darned if I want to actually pay for a new computer now with school semester coming around.  And also I qualified for my license back a few months ago.  Need my monies for that.

If you have nothing on the usb drive, you can use command line stuff for it but if your other computer isn't linux I have no clue what the commands are, but! There is a program called unetbootin which I've never had trouble producing proper usb linux installers and live sessions with.

Barring that I think there is a windows only one called liveusb something or other too?

so kubuntu is kids-ubuntu  :|

Less than a fan of that idea, but as long as I can get back to work Ill live somehow.

I couldnt format the 64gb drive, I guess its because I tried to use a partition table instead of not messing with what I dont know.

Hey, eat me! I love kde/Plasma dammit, it works well with my video cards, I can change everything to minute detail, and have pretty transparency effects!

I feel like Im using this as a dump now.

Ive managed to format the 64gb flash drive, and I just got it to load the 'test' linux.  I tried to directly install it from a second flash drive before, and it denied the everloving bullocks out of me.

So, fingers crossed, it will manage to install on its own.

In the meantime, Ive been pondering just how much money I would need to spend to get a laptop that functions only as fast as I need to take notes, run a few lab programs, and handle github and etc.  Id be doing it all in linux, with the windows in backup.
A real thing Ive noticed is that these 200-400*$* laptops are sooo quick to advertise 500 or even a 1000gb of storage, without mentioning how they are outperformed by my android phone.

So, I think 350?  I could live with an 'everyday' computer, I think.  Linux is supposed to be fast enough?  Id be happy with something that could run DF for 3 years/200 dwarves.  For easy reference.  A lot of these laptops do multicore processors, which :|.

This is worth a lookover to familiarize yourself with the different program packages and whatnot, it's usually not the best sign if you're picking up an unknown linux distribution and see stuff like a bunch of the ubuntu line programs mixed with some of the xfce family and one random englightenment program, as each of those will carry certain dependencies and bring in a bunch of packages that you will never even see, much less use.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_X_Window_System_desktop_environments

KDE isn't the lightest, but on an i3 with a GT 730 and 8 GB of ram it sits under 3 GB of ram used unless I'm playing df, listening to music on youtube, and say, making gifs in GIMP? Stuff like lxde which lubuntu uses is going to sip your resources like a camel.

I managed it.  Not on a flash drive, that just ended up one issue after another, but by getting a laptop a few years old and doing it onto the hard drive.

dont know that Im better for it, but meh.  So Firefox.  Dont know if I like tbf.  I heard theres a addon to make it go back to being the classic view.

Pale Moon is neat, for Firefox I use Hide Caption Titlebar Plus, a couple of userscripts with Stylish/Greasemonkey, and Classic Theme Restorer to get everything on a single bar like it should be.

Plus force everything to use white text on grey backgrounds, except the few sites which already do that (bay12) or are close enough that I can leave them (imgur) with github being the sole white background site because it screws up the colors in the code view otherwise.

Dark backgrounds work just as well at night, while bright ones are kinda crap then because ow.

It's the df section default, until I came down here to roll around in the cesspool of the lower boards with ya'll I didn't know there were other colors used. It's rare to find a website you can trust to handle their colors, black text on white background isn't offensive really but it's just harsh on a screen, but if that was the worst of it I wouldn't have figured out how to convert scripts to my preferred color scheme while keeping stuff like transparency intact (originally I just went with a flat "force this background/this foreground" which ends up with any transparent panel colored in, whoops) but I want to punch people who think any sort of pastel text on any sort of pastel background is "cute" or worth anything but censure.
