Space Command : Tactical Suggestion Game
« on: April 02, 2016, 11:23:54 am »

Intro

The Grand Assembly has voted for war.

The events leading up to this decision, though perhaps the most important, will be remembered only by scholars and their students. The political landscape of the Conglomerate used to be dominated by the Exostrains, groups small in population, but wielding vast economical power through their control of the vast resources present in space. However, the source of their power also held the seeds of their fall. The abundance, and the ease and speed by which these resources could be exploited meant that they were not irreplaceable, while the vast resources streams allowed the old Worlds to resolve their internal issues and becomes prosperous powerhouses.

The events of the vote itself, though of little historical importance, have been etched in collective memory, and will, when time calls for it, be revisited in the broadcasts. The various speeches, and the unfortunate demise of one delegation, will be cast in new lights, the old words used to convince the Drones, the general populaces of new ideas. The decision itself however, and the breakdown of the traditional alliance between the new Colonies and the old Worlds in favor of an opportunistic agreement between the Exostrains and the colonies , was inevitable. The barren worlds of the colonies,  colonized during an era of strife on the old Worlds feared being rendered redundant, politically irrelevant, and soon forgotten.

If not for the chance encounter of a Conglomerate ship with an actual alien empire a few years prior, these events may have resulted in a civil war. Instead, a coalition of opportunity of the new colonies and the Exostrains, forced the Grand Assembly, declaring a war on the alien Empire. The Exostrains hope to acquire planets, industrial infrastructure, and a population of drones to operate them. The colonies seek to aid the Exostrains in exchange for mineral resources, though some contemplate the idea of simply capturing a more hospitable. Both hope to accomplish this to avoid becoming pawns before the rising power of the old worlds.

The Game

You're not part of the drones, though should you fail, that fate may befall you. You have done as much as you can to get this position; You lead the assault on a minor star system, one of many in the larger war. Your forces are small, but, with a few early success, you hope to convince your backers that you can ascertain victory and get the forces you need. Now, first, a few questions

Who are you?

What forced you to take this position?

A: Political elimination, you used to be important, and have some influence remaining, but also some enemies
B: Contract bound, you had bound your fate to another player, and he failed, leaving you not yet a slave, but bounded by contract to anothers will
C: Debt, your small corporation failed economically, and though you have assets, you also have yet greater debt
D: Other

Who sponsors your expedition?

A: Exostrains, small in number, but elite forces
B: Colonials, larger in number, but nowhere near as professional. Renowned for innovative and efficient solutions, though others would describe it as jurryrigged crap
C: The old World, though still occupied with internal matters, feel themselves forced to involve themselves
D: Yourself, meaning you can get a far larger part of the spoils
E: Suggest something else

What does your force look like?
A : A squadron of nimble Corvettes equipped with long range missiles
B : A powerful cruiser, and a limited number of destroyers as it's escort
C : A Ground assault force, including landing vessels and assault ships, as well as a Conduit gate, a powerfull piece of equipment allowing interstellar travel from the planet's surface
D: Suggest something else

Looks cool! Is this like, each player controls their own squad sort of thing, or we all vote on what our troops do? I know SG's are usually the latter, but I noticed in that first part it says you are "bound to another player", so it could go either way.

Either way, I'll be posting to watch!

A: We're gonna claw our way to the top of the political system, or die trying
A: Exostrain sponsored, our forces shall be the efficient scalpel, not the unwieldy club.
A: We'll be better equipped to actually destroy enemies with our small number, it won't be our job so much to take locations.  But, we will have plenty of awesome space battle to our name.

War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

You turn away from the screens, repeating the events that unfolded in the Grand Assembly last week, and head towards your ships. The asteroid docks here form a hive of activity, as final staging point for the many expeditions that are being prepared. A vac train takes you from the crew habitation areas near the rim of the station to the docks at the Axis, where you can observe your fleet.

Six Nix-class corvettes lay side by side, their soft black hulls sparsely illuminated by the workings of the shipyards. Their form is dominated by the massive fusion torch on the end of the vessels, which make them among the fastest warships in action. You can just barely make out the details of the 2 laser turrets that protect the vessel from missiles. You know that, hidden from view deep within the ship, there's also a particle shield generator intended to stop and diffuse laser weaponry. Surrounding that equipment and the crew are 18 missile tubes, the vessels primary armament.

Further, in the dockyard, a number of robotic arms are carefully loading large vacuum sealed crates in an Arcadia class freighter. Crates filled with parts, food, and other things needed for long term operation in space. Another, far larger waldo is slowly moving an armored module to the ship, welders already standing at the ready to attach it to the frame. Inside this ammunition storage sit the ammunition for your Nix class Corvettes. Large anti capital ship missiles with 50 kT warheads, long nimble missiles intended for high speed intercepts, Short squat missiles, whose warheads hide a cluster of smaller missiles.

You're still waiting for the final ship to arrive, a Conduit class ship which can take you across the stars to your destination. Technically, this ship would only be leased to you, as these ships are very expensive. You'll have to take care of it. Losing it would be a death sentence, even if you weren't stuck in a hostile system without support.

Now, who are you? And are you planning to do anything before you launch your expedition?

Take a look in our manifests whether we have boarding crews and/or prize crews. Encountering a new Alien Empire means at the beginning ships are very very precious and bring in loads of cash due to the eggheads wanting to study the tech so we might want to get in there before its over

Even more importantly, we want to met the senior officers of our ships and get to know them. Pissing them off is NOT a good way of conducting a war as that leads to things like mutiny and our ass being shoved out an airlock without the benefit of a suit.

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

Yuuuuuuup! Fraternise like a muh. Build morale early, and consult the eggheads for any and all intelligence. Knowledge is power, and knowing is half the battle.
