Riverdale - Hallflings

This is my first attempt to spin a story of a fortress I plan to commit to last play more than 5 years.
Perhaps it may turn into a community fortress, perhaps a succession.

I'm not really sure how this game will go.  I would like to at least establish the buildings for the "factions" then perhaps if there are interest, make it a succession fort.

An embark without beards is destined to fail.  How will you fish?  Or smooth stone?  Or forge metal?  THINK, LAD!!

:D

I'm new to succession forts in general, yes, but do all forts designed by multiple overseers inevitably degenerate into a body-filled labyrinth of chaos and despair like this? Or is this just a Battlefailed thing?

There isn't much middle ground between killed-by-dragon and never-seen-by-dragon.

It's not modded, it's normal dorfs and trying to fit them into above ground fort with roles (be it military or civilian)
I just will not do too much "jack of all trades" type labor--but I'll have to see how this plays out.

I'm thinking of the rules, each citizen chooses:
- a profession weighted by preferences
- military or civilian "guild/faction"

Initially, mechanics are placed with the stone industry, so I am thinking the Miner's Guild will have it's own building where the quarry digging begins with a wing for the miners (barracks), the masons and mechanics, and crafting wing for stone craft and gems.

The bookeeper will have a house in the eventual noble housing, but not necessarily a permanent job, quite perfect for learning a military skill.

The tavern keeper may be a semi-retired Militia (axe) or from Adventure's Unlimited (wresting, foreign weapons).

Chapter 1

Spring brings out the best intentions of everyone in the group.  Obok Coppersieged, like cream of creams rising to the top, became the expedition leader of Hallflings.  She took upon the roles of most of the noble jobs of manager, broker, and bookkeeper.  Obok’s agenda revolves around the Riverdale’s trade and commerce.  Obok founded the “Soldier of Commerce” guild.  Obok also pursues the profession of armorsmithing on top of the martial skills in war hammers.

Atir Foggychambers represents and founded the “Clerics of Temples” in pursuit to oversee the affairs involving worship in Riverdale.  He pursues weaponsmithing profession, and is skilled with maces as any proper cleric.

Mosus Flashedtrumpet is a carpenter by profession and founded the “Rangers of the Hunt” guild chapter in Riverdale.  He intends to build the archery range and practice with the crossbow.

As Carrywheeled is a mechanic and founded the “Paladins of Learning” to supervise the building of the library in Riverdale.  She also looks forward to continue her training in the martial skills of the sword.

Lokum Showercloister is both an herbalist and planter, and looks forward to organizing the logistics of supplying a thriving city with plenty of food and booze.

Tosid Papergranite is promoted as the militia commander as representative of the “Militia of the Woods” guild chapter of Riverdale.  He makes use of this axe skills as a woodcutter and has been dabbling in other crafting professions.

Vucar Lulledhatchets heads the “Sheriff of Riverdale” to police the citizens and eventual visitors.  He awaits the building of the barracks and tavern.

--

Everyone understands that this is an outpost and not yet a city, so everything will be meager in quality and they will make do sharing quarters and resources.

Vucar plies his masonry making gabbro blocks to wall around the wagon, dubbing this first building as “Wagon House.”  The design is simple with two entries from the west and east.  The basement will serve as dining hall with separate rooms for the turkeys and pigs.

Obok crammed two offices in the basement center room and claiming one for herself.  Mosus, the acting chief doctor takes the other office.

Around the wagon, As claims a corner for a mechanic workshop, while Mosus begin on making furniture in his carpenter shop.  A craftsdwarf shop is hastily made in the remaining corner to build some nest boxes.

The wagon house construction rises up to the bedrooms in the second floor, and spacious room on the third floor.

Lokum has made aware to everyone that the booze pile is finite and that the Brewer House must be constructed next.  Her building specification is a simple basement farms, stills, barrels and drinks storage, and a third floor bedrooms.

The spring ends peacefully with the passing of a herd of elephants coming from the southeast.

Riverdale - Hallflings - Chapter 2: First Year of Riverdale

Chapter 2: First Year of Riverdale

Summer heat blankets the forest and four new migrants join Riverdale.
First is Tirist `Gwolfski’ Crestedrelics who proceeds to go fishing at the stream to the south.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Gwolfski demands the immediate building of a Fishery as the raw mussels he gathered will start rotting.  Captain Obok appeased Gwolfski with the beginning construction of the Fisher Wharf which will serve both as the fisherman’s guild, guard room, and bridge over the stream with walls and safety grates.

However, a cloud of devilish smoke began to drift from the haunted swamp, The Smeared Goo.  Gwolfski was enveloped by this smoke but resulted in no apparent ailment (how disappointing thought Captain Obok).

Nevertheless, Gwolfski refused to continue to fishing and instead wants to practice his war hammer skills when the barracks are ready.  Captain Obok grins, "Welcome Soldier `Gwolfski' Crestedrelics to the ranks of the Soldier of Commerce."

Fishing has been temporarily forbidden despite the devilish smoke having no apparent ill-effects.  The construction of the Fisher Wharf will continue someday.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The second to arrive is Mistem Toolfogs, wife of Gwolfski.  She immediately joins the Militia of the Woods.

Farmer Lor Valedaggers is the third new arrival and helps build the Farm House building next to the Brewer House.  It has 3 farm plots for above ground plants, and 3 farm plots for underground plants.  There will be two farmer’s workshops, querns and screw presses.  The second floor will be stockpile for the plants, fruits, and millable food.  The third floor will be bedrooms for the farmers.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Inod Craftvirgin[/b] is the fourth arrival and also joins the Soldier of Commerce.  With these bolster in membership of the Soldier of Commerce, the Trade Depot is built before autumn.  The Trade Depot’s protection will be the responsibility of the Soldier of Commerce.  Walls are hastily constructed around the the trade depot.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Autumn, and a caravan from Sheddoren has arrived.  The Liaison Zutthan Gegetuzo reports, "the world is the same as ever."

Captain and Trader Obok requested pig leather, iron and steel bars, anvils, breeding pigs, dwarven flour and sugar and syrup, garnerite stones, nickel cages, leather bags, sand bags, glass, fire clay, and sheets.  Captain Obok procured minor items and extra food and drinks.

The merchants have left, but the Liaison Zutthan remains in Riverdale.

Four new migrants also arrived this autumn.

Squire Zuntir Chamberround is a member of Paladins of Learning with his wife Carpenter Unib Riddledoar.

Deputy Etur Ragnature is a member of Sheriff of Riverdale.  And Mason Ablel Fountaintunneled is a mason citizen of Riverdale.

With all these extra hands, The Misty Foot inn construction continues.  The inn is designated for the citizens of Riverdale only.  Gwolfski volunteers to be its tavern keeper once the Soldiers of Commerce have built their barracks and have their uniforms ready.  The basement of Misty Foot inn will have a double kitchen with plenty of food preparation stockpiles.  The first floor is a large dance floor common area, the second and third floor will have dining area and eight bedrooms on each level.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The gabbro stones are depleted by late autumn, so the miners began to delve deeper in search for more stones, and also for magma.

They struck microcline, limestone (flux), and kaolinite (clay) within five levels below.  Stone workshops are setup in this new stone quarry level.  To increase building materials,  Captain Obok approved the use of both flux and clay for construction blocks.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Winter arrives, and clouds of devilish smoke continue to annoy for it even forms on the roof of the Wagon House and on the third floor construction of the Misty Foot inn.  This smoke is mostly ignored nowadays.

The paladins and clerics appreciate the use of limestones when the miners started building the Miner of Brell building.  They note that use of such economic stones for buildings just incrementally increased the quality expectations of future buildings.
