The Good Succession Fort: Interest Check
« on: March 29, 2016, 11:04:23 pm »

One of the first self-imposed challenges a Dwarf Fortress player faces is an embark in an evil biome, with its zombies, syndromes, and other !!FUN!! challenges. This extends to community and succession forts as well, such as Roomcarnage and Bonepillar. But less common is the opposite- a good biome.

Which is why I'd like to try starting a story-focused succession fort in a Joyous Wilds biome.

I've genned a coupe test worlds, (Small size, High Savagery, Short history, Frequent minerals, medium everything else,) and this is the best embark site I've found.

Spoiler: Hypothetical Embark (click to show/hide)

Neighbors are Dwarves, Goblins, and Humans (no elves, and none of the 10 worlds I genned had elves neighboring a Joyous Wilds)
It's got a river, cliffs, and half of the map has an aquifer.

So who would be interested? Should I change anything about my worldgen or look for a different sort of embark?

And what sort of embark preparations should I make? I usually just use the default "Play now" settings, but for a Succession fort that probably won't cut it.

I find that having fewer cavern layers param better for FPS; 1 or 2 cavern layers instead of 3 can help in the long run.
So a 4x4 embark size can be decent.

It also sounds like a Joyous Wild embark encourages above ground more for some reason.
So if you can find a half tropical & half temperate embark, it will diversify the above ground crops.

Although rare, 1 corner tile being evil biome would be a bonus.

I won't miss elves.

I like to check legends Viewer before I embark, just so see that civs, monarchs, worships, and recent wars. It's enough to get a premise going.

In the recent months, I've an idea that started from Hobbiton (wiki) challenge, then morphed into Halflings as I veered away from Tolkien, which then got inspired by nostalgia from Riverdale (starting halfling city in EverQuest), and eventually trying to fit those in v42.06 taverns, libraries, and temples.

I have ideas fleshed out if you guys are interested, I'd gladly share.

I actually haven't done much in good areas, so I'd definitely be interested if this happens  :)

I'm new to succession forts in general, yes, but do all forts designed by multiple overseers inevitably degenerate into a body-filled labyrinth of chaos and despair like this? Or is this just a Battlefailed thing?

There isn't much middle ground between killed-by-dragon and never-seen-by-dragon.

I myself have not really given much thought to the good biomes, until you said something... I'll be in if you go forward with the idea

I would be interested if there wasn't an aquifer  :(

They make perfect sense. And infinite water is so usefull. And they are easy to puncture.

Aquifers are alright and becomes trivial after breaching.
