0.34.11 oddness (solved)
« on: March 28, 2016, 09:11:05 am »

Recently I started a 0.34 fort. Everything seemed fine but for some reason they couldn't feed the patients. There were tons of messages about no water source and food.
I had an active well and free buckets, and I saw they grabbed a bucket before canceling the job.

Other things:
No alert/burrow.
The well had an empty bucket in it.
The well was right inside the hospital, so there was no pathing issue.

Check the water below your well, you must have a couple of Z level in which the water is clean (there's no mud) , if you have only 1 Z level in your well, it's then very likely that you'll see there's then mud, the water will be considered unclean and so will not be used by your dwarves.

Have you tried to mark a source of water with a zone both including the water and the walkable area around it ? maybe that would help your dwarves to figure out they have water there.

Then there's the problem of stagnant water, it happened a lot in the past, stagnant water tiles were contamining regularly the other water tiles it touched until it ended with all your map having stagnant water even when the water was flowing.
It was a heavy bug and was fixed with using pump, it re-cleaned the water. But this one had been fixed a bit before 34.11 , so it shouldn't be that.

edit : salt water, check if you have salt water in your well too, they will not use it if it's salt water.
And try to make more bucket, there's a chance you have the bucket bug, i remember sometime it happened that a bucket still had a bit of water in it and the dwarves refused to use it anymore.
DFHack had a command to fix that and empty those buckets so dwarves could re-use them, but i don't remember it

Ah, the problem was solved.
I placed the well right inside someone's bedroom, which overlapped with the hospital, so the well became part of the room...

Must be a stupid mistake but I didn't know that before.

 :P

Edit*

My solution was making the well a meeting hall so it became public again.
