No change in form, no different firing patterns? No rocket launchers? :(

Well, everything is essentially an energy gun. Pistol is essentially a rifle with highest damage per shot and range. Shotgun fires in a burst and has a range of about 3-4x your character's size, smg has moderate range, low damage (about 1/4 the damage of a pistol), higher fire rate, but sub-par accuracy. I generally stick to pistol for long range and shotgun for close encounters.

There is ONE other researchable weapon line, but I found it useless. It does have a good AOE and does about 2x a damage of a shotgun, but it takes a ton of energy, the projectile is laughably slow (you can walk faster), it disappears after traveling without hitting anything (about smg range), and it overheats in 2 shots.

I think the research is not the core of the game in that regard: the improvement of a new gun over the previous one is subtle, and making new guns all over consumes some resources which are not all that frequent.

Some more variety in weapon research would be nice, yeah. As it is my maximum priorities are chips and drugs. In those you *can* see the improvement right away. Plus it's less resource-consuming (rather, chips are a "spend-once" matter, drugs use resources which are renewable -aka mutant bits and pieces-)

Yeah, in the little I played last night, SMG seemed like the clear loser between the three weapons.

Does melee ever pan out later on? Seems only useful in the beginning when you can take your time beating up one guy.

It saves energy and weapon durability that you would otherwise use up killing eggs, bugs, and stragglers. Between pistol, shotgun, and knife; I've managed to stretch my usage to fully explore 1.5-2 levels per run.

At tier 3 it gains the stun capability as if they were struck by stun grenades.

I've not found melee very useful because melee weapons dont have much durability. And if I have to lug an extra weapon, might as well bring another minigun

I take it power consumption increases with weapon level pretty significantly? Seems like durability is the bigger danger in the early game, especially since you can bring multiple power packs.

Durability tends to be a bigger issue. Though power use does increase, so does the size of power packs. Rather, there are just a LOT more enemies once you hit that 25% evolution mark. I'm at 46%, and running into a room with 3 spitters-types, 2 hulks, and 2 big beetles (along with 4 small beetles) is quite common.

And for the record, those tentacled eye things look stupid as hell compared to pretty much everything else in game.

I said as much in the GOG forums: my biggest problem, and my reason to lug several guns along, is durability.

In fact my biggest dillema right now is about weapons. I already regard melee and shotguns as near useless. I'm torn between smgs and handguns (more like sniper rifles than hamdguns btw), however

So, any spoiler-free tips on the better places to go first? I did the Casino and that was like 3 in-game days to clear for the

If you fully explore the different central wings, you'll find journal entry chips; they give not-so-subtle hints on where to find the various upgrade chips; the areas you find those chips also have journal entries to find the next level chip.

Spoiler: Moar spoilers (click to show/hide)

Note that you can skip tiers, but you need research level 1 to research level 2 chips, and engineering level 2 to create them, and so on.

Pissing is one thing, but crapping? I would find a toilet. I'm not taking a crap without paper when I'm inside a building that has those facilities unless I am in very immediate danger.

Seems like an interesting game though! It's been on my Steam wishlist for a while. Nice to hear some opinions on it from people I know.

It's rather hilarious that you'd strip off your spacesuit at -20C to answer nature's call though.
