I kinda want to see this film just based off of how different the consumer and critical audience's reaction appears to be, something neat is going on

Because I thought that was one of the most bland and uninspired superhero movies I have ever seen.

I must say, I really liked Man of Steel, and its the best superman movie for me (never was a fan of the old movies). Didnt watch this one yet.

I have seen it, with my friend, DC fan. So I've got two differing opinions I can offer for this.

If you're a DC fan, don't pay to watch it.
If you've seen any avengers movies recently, don't pay to watch it.

I've been ignoring* all of DC's shit since they ended Smallville and rebooted everything instead of making spinoff shows and/or movies for the individual characters in it. Well, I was ignoring their shit before that too, except Smallville, because that was actually good.

I haven't watched the movie yet, but this review caught my eye as it's the only positive response I've seen so far. It is an interesting perspective, though. I've seen a people criticize the portrayal of the heroes as innacurate - this guy believes that this time it wasn't an edgy cash-in like usual, but rather a deliberate attempt to get viewers to think about these characters in a wider context. If you're uncomfortable with Batman using guns, then that means you've made a critical comparison between the movie and your past experience of Batman, and you've come to a conclusion about what makes Batman Batman. That sounds kind of impressive to me.

That said, I don't know if this guy is right. And even if he's correct about the intent of the movie, it could still be poorly executed.

Actually, I don't think that review is negative.

It's describing how the movie is fucked up on every level and is the opposite of what you expect in a typical superhero movie. That would actually encourage me to check it out.

Take note, too, of Superman fucking Lois Lane in a bathtub. BVS is brutal to nostalgia. Batman's entire battle cry is how Superman is a naïf, a child, and how he's going to make him into a man by beating him to death. He crystallizes the struggle as offense that Superman's code is borrowed from a dead Kansas farmer, while Batman's is forged in the understanding that people die for no reason and that the only sense in the Universe is the sense one tries to impose on it.

I mean, how is any of that describing a bad thing? The superhero genre is insipid nostalgia, and this movie basically spits on the whole thing.

The problem, at least to me, is that the movie is entirely hollow.

For one, Batman's only motivations to hate Superman to the point of wanting to skewer him is the fact that there was a lot of damage in the city and he had to save some little girl. That's it. The first time you actually see Batman, he's already branding people and trying to acquire the kryptonite that Lex has in order to kill Superman, well before Lex starts actually fucking with his head. They had a fascinating premise that they could have worked with (the premise of collateral damage when trying to save the world) and completely and utterly ignored it other than as a half-assed motivation for Batman. The rest of the massive conflicts in this movie now occur in abandoned areas, just to ensure that they can't be bitched at for it again.

I mean, hell, the way they set the whole thing up, they made Batman the bad guy. They made Superman a selfish asshole who gives no fucks about saving anyone other than the person who he fucks. They turned Lex Luther into the goddamn Joker, trying to immolate Superman's mother. I mean, fuck, they made him into a raving lunatic whose only reason to want Superman dead is the fact that he's a raving lunatic. Even Superman has no motivation in any of this; he just exists as a symbol, and nothing more. The characters are reduced to nothing but symbols, without a shred of personality or depth. You could argue that this is all a good thing, that this franchise needs to be darker rather than the same colorful nonsense as before.

This isn't dark. It's grimdark, and that's idiotic.

My spidey sense is tingling. I'VE READ THIS BEFORE.

No, he made Watchmen. I mean, when it comes to Snyder, this is just par for the course.

Watchmen was more or less a shot-for-shot adaptation of the comic (Cuts and changes to the ending aside), and the weakest parts of the film were all Snyderisms.

Batman v Superman is basically what Watchmen would of been if they were not able to rely on using the work of Alan Moore as a storyboard.
