Elk Birds are infamous for being really annoying to breed and such. They require a pasture as well as a nestbox to lay eggs. But if they have a nestbox they will starve themselves to death instead of getting off their eggs.

I'd recommend taming something easier.

Most "hostile" critters in DF are bugged so they won't usually attack (including colonies of bat men, rodent men, etc. in the caverns). There are reports of non attacking blind cave ogres and trolls as well. However, sapient creatures (such as troglodytes) cannot be tamed, with the lone, odd, exception of gremlins.

Taming elk birds isn't that much of a problem, but breeding them is another matter, as King Kitteh pointed out.

Also, do you know you can modify your post, rather than creating a new one?

All of my pets are up for breeding. All I need is one baby from the litter, any will do. You can keep the baby if they only have one. Let me know if any of my babies are ones you want to breed with and I'll grow them if it't not too many posts.

I now know why new users to the forums are called "Escaped lunatics"...

As opposed to the rest of us, who have been rounded up and now sit and watch the bay through the fortification...

Back when I was a lurker I thought that Bay Watcher was referring to the show BayWatch instead of Bay12games...

I still don't know if that's an inside joke or not, but whatever. Can't blame someone for watching BayWatch.
