He also said there will be free movement of labor, which means that nothing will actually change in practice.

I guess it's appropriate in a way. The Leave campaign made a lot of bullshit statements that would be easily exposed as false because they thought they weren't going to win (this is why Farage was saying things like "In a 52-48 referendum this would be unfinished business by a long way" about a month ago). That's basically the same reason Cameron promised the referendum in the first place

All the politicos are so very in touch with the desires of their electorate, after all.

As one of the 18-24 voters (barely at 24), I had a little opinion piece on why my age group is so ticked.

We were raised to believe that we should try and be kind, to try think of the well-being of others regardless of things like race and sexuality, that we should help others where possible and care for their well-being. That we should respect our fellows and seek to work together with them. Our parents and grandparents taught us that.

And that's why it hurts so much. Because we've since then had to repeatedly fight against them for those ideals they instilled us. And whilst we've won some of those fights, such as the fight for equal marriage, we've lost others. Such as the fight for fair, equal and affordable access to education, and the fight for the protecting the vulnerable from having their support structures decimated. And now, we've lost the fight for people of all races and creeds to live and work and love in the UK free of discrimination. Because this referendum has bolstered the racists and xenophobes and was fought on those grounds, and that is a dangerous precedent.

It hurts because we realise our parents and grandparents lied. That those values they worked so hard to instil in us weren't values they held. That is why the last few years of politics has been so painful. Because we respected our parents and grandparents generation for raising us with those values. And to see them try and cast them aside time and time again as soon as it became inconvenient, it has cost them that respect.

That's why the brexit result hurts so much. It's not a single issue, it's the culmination of a generation gradually realising we've been lied to by the people we love.

And it hurts.

Wow, so salty. Look, I was/am firmly in the remain camp. In part, I BLAME your age group for the result which you are now so saddened by. Most of your age bracket did not even vote in the referendum - if your age bracket did not care enough before, why such disgust now? As such, your generation has no right to bellyache about a decision they opted out of influencing when they KNEW they could have had a major impact on it in advance. If your generation felt so strongly, maybe they should have voted in order to get the result they wanted. Heck, it should surprise NOBODY that the older generation would vote for a leave vote (polling told us this), and that they would turn out in large numbers (history tells us this). Did... did your demographic think it would go the way they wanted without acting upon those desires? Let us hope they learn their lesson.

Look at the bright side. Brexit won't really affect immigrants from former UK colonies like India. It will mostly hit slavs from the eastern europe who are most certainly white so it's not racist to gate them out if need be.

-snip-
Personally, as a 24yo citizen of an EU member, I too was raised on the "left" platform. That lasted until, what, a few years ago where I saw that the blind dogmatic adherence of that ideology is unsustainable and untenable to the point of counter-productive stupidity.

The mega-est lulz is that Scotland only voted against independence because they were warned that they wouldn't be able to stay in the EU if they left the UK.

So wanting to make the Slavs a subjugated race of serfs wasn't racist back in the '40s?

Of course. Race is entirely about melanin content these days. If you have melanin then you're a minority and deserve protection. If you don't have melanin you're a racist and you deserve all bad treatment you get.

So, two things. First, the people in that age group who did vote have every right to be upset. With the ones who didn't, perhaps, but getting annoyed at the ones who voted is rather dumb.

Second, the forebrain isn't fully developed until around 25. Myelination, which is an important part of cognitive ability for both essentially everything but particularly reasoning, is yet to really finish coating everything until that point. And democracy doesn't just depend on a large voterbase, it relies on an informed voterbase, one that cares enough to do research on the issues, rather than take whatever politicians/media says at face value (unless, of course, they happen to be honest), and it relies on one that can actually communicate with the other side on each other's viewpoints so thst you can grind closer to truth or optimization or what-have-you. So young people not voting as much isn't as terrible as people think. I say this as a young voter, too.

Republics tend to be much better, in a way, for that sort of thing, less subject to fickle whims of the masses, but more easily corrupted. Democratic republics are attempts to get the best of both worlds, but they still rely on voter investment in the system.

And it's rather hard to be invested in voting when it means you might have to, say, take a day off work that you can't afford to with your rent. Old people are at least as vulnerable as young, if not more so, when it comes to the government's effect on them(the very old, that is, not the 40-50). They are far less vulnerable to market influences, however. *shrug*

You'd be surprised;  a guy about five pages back was dead serious about kicking out all the "wogs" (bonus points for the slur, too). So yeah, I don't know if Sonlirain meant it or not, but if he didn't, I'm not surprised that people didn't get it.
