A sad day. Guess I'm gonna have to cancel plans to visit London now, good thing nothing was booked yet :/
Why is that? where are you from? if anything, now is a good time to visit London with the low pound. tourist agencies already started advertising fly&shop deals to london.
Yeah there's a sweetspot for tourists in London right now, imo you should go to Greece, they need the money more

Though I guess as a Londoner I'm also obliged to recommend London

It's kind of fascinating that so many older people voted to leave, considering they're typically the ones with houses, savings, pensions, and other assets that are going to depreciate as a result of the economic repercussions. A falling Pound is actually great news for people with debt, right? And young people are the ones who are going to benefit from that. Particularly people who plan on leaving the UK -- if they have any student loan debt, then it just got a lot easier to pay off. It's the people who are stuck in the UK that are hurt the most.

It's also interesting because older people are generally considered to vote "conservative" in the traditional sense: voting to conserve the status quo. Young people in general are more likely to eventually survive change, whereas people who are already established worry harder about losing things. Interesting then, it seems like the vote was perceived in different categories then that.

In this case, "traditional" probably meant "pre EU."

See, the rub here is that there's assets to depreciate. Folks with houses, savings, and pensions don't have to worry nearly as much if the economy does take a nose dive, or shit gets rough to whatever degree for the primary workers -- they've already got theirs, as the saying goes. Risk (ideological purity, whatever) comes a lot easier when you've got a guaranteed income (pension, substantial assets) to look at rather than, y'know, what the younger generations are looking at.

As misk, the rub there is that for a lot of 'em, that "status quo" was thirty years ago.

Plus the older folks... they may worry harder about losing things, but they're also often significantly less risk averse in a lot of ways, from what I've noticed. Having those things means you have wiggle room, areas where you can gamble and not have to really worry about the consequences in any substantial fashion. Younger, less established folks... they don't have that. They're less vocal about it largely just because they don't have the bloody time to be.

Best part about being old is that even if you're completely wrong, you'll probably die within a decade or two anyway and it won't matter. How could you not be confident in that situation?

Because if you're wrong, everything you loved and everyone you loved will suffer beyond you, and you will spent the last decades of your life watching it fall apart, seeing your life's work, your ancestral homeland run to ruins. Assuming you actually do outlive your grandchildren. One thing I don't like is how there have been recent pushes to make everyone atomized individuals seeking self-pleasure for themself, entirely disconnected from their roots, entirely appalled by the notion of starting a family. I think then it is quite revealing when people indicate they believe all think like them in this manner.

Spoiler: More based gommies (click to show/hide)
That's one of the surprising things like before with Corbyn, about how he surprisingly won me over in how sincerely he seemed to despise the EU conduct, only supporting Remain because it allowed his socialist alliance to operate more effectively throughout the European Union so that they could perhaps one day usurp the power of private corporations. What a strange coalition of peoples have come together!

I would honestly love to see The UK to turn back into Britain.

I honestly don't know why Scotland, North Ireland, and Wales put up with it beyond dependency and tradition at this point.

It isn't like Britain respects them (well maybe Wales)

Dunno, have the rather silly notion right now our Britain friends made it clear they don't want us anymore. Kinda dumb to link things like this I'll readily admit, but then again, they always do tell us to vote with our wallets. That said, in general I hope the EU won't try to 'punish' the UK or anything like that, but that they can instead talk it over like reasonable people. But for me personally, I don't think I wanna visit there anytime soon.

Either way, gonna re-evaluate when the time rolls around. Greece is indeed a better candidate to have money thrown at, but probably much too far for what I was planning. Compared to where I am now, where a relatively small amount of traveling allows me to basically high-five a chap standing on the Cliffs of Dover if I get a good running start and have wind in the back.

In vaguely related news, Iran (and Russia) are apparently happy with the outcome (dunno if it's been posted already):
Iran Sees Brexit And The Potential Collapse Of The EU As A Historic Opportunity.
Russia and Iran delight in UK's rejection of EU.

Also, that petition is up to 305,293 votes. Does that mean they'll bring it up in parliament thrice now?  :P
