Poor Gaelic. Wonder if the Welsh still dream of being a country.
I don't think I'd call the Welsh something like Gaels. That I'd ascribe purely to the C/Q-celtics (Irish, Manx, Scottish), whilst Wales (along with the Cornish and of course Brittany in France, the P-celtics) are more Brittonic ('Britons', in the original sense.)

I have it from a first class source (Monkeyhead) that you are indeed correct.

I meant the language.

It still appplies though, only Irish, Manx, and Scottish talk Gaelic tongues. Wales, Cornwall, and Brittany speak Brythonic languages.

In hindsight, they should have given the referendum's higher requirements then a simple majority. It would have saved Cameron the heartache he's in now, and it wouldn't have come off as particularly scummy if argued right: "We hardly want to do something so irrevocable and important as leaving forever without the consent of the country. 50% plus one person is not the will of the people, it is the will of half of them." then argue for something like 55%, 60%, or 66%, depending on which is easier to pass. Boom, Cameron wouldn't be hiding in the corner wondering where it all went wrong right now. The only issue is that he would have had to do the same for the Scottish Referendum too, but this is obviously hindsight anyway so it doesn't really matter.

that would not be a fair democracy if leaders could change the rule as they see fit for their political agenda. that'd be tyranny. today would be used for good and then you'd regret giving away this power forever.

Welsh language is Welsh (Cymraeg) not Gaelic. And it's doing well.

I'm not sure how I feel about the whole "the majority of voters disagreed with me democracy has been stolen" thing.  On one hand a direct referendum seems like a dumb way to do things.  On the other hand I think that cause to be honest I'm not sure I agree with the idea of popular sovereignty at all.

It's not actually too late because the referendum is entirely non-binding.

Imagine the shitstorm if Cameron's replacement decides to overrule the decision

Huh. Woke up, checked the pound/usd exchange rate (this is becoming something of a hobby >_>). Turns out it's now managed to get below the immediate post results drop. I... guess the asian markets really are quite unhappy with them? Either that or other markets are reacting to yesterday's reaction or somethin'. Still.

Gonna' be interesting to see what it looks like friday...

OW: Well, it depend. If there is a general election, and say, Labour wins big campaigning on overturning the referendum, they might have a case.

I don't know if that'd work.  Look at many of the heartland labourite areas that went Leave.

UKIP would probably gain seats (adding to the one they have now) from both Labour-out and Conservative-out branches, and unless there's a Liberal bounce the only anti-brexit government would appear to be a Lab-Con coalition...  Which would be... weird.

Edit: Also, there's an obvious groundswell for Out, even with regretful Brexiters switching back. Which is why I (not a fan of exiting) think it should be done now and quickly. Get over the divorce, get on with life, get an honest profile up on the International dating sites and/or find some new roomies to move in with. Maybe that 'Merica that we've long been drinking buddies with.

Geez, I'm getting saltier about this by the day. LW, do you wanna change the poll to "salty" vs. "not salty"?
What do you mean?

I wonder if UKIP would suffer from the "Well, there is no reason to vote for them now that we're out" effect in a general election.

Depending on when we leave the EU, I'd say there's a fair chance of that, be a bit pointless to continue going on when you've done your service

Well, they can always realign as your local populist-anti-immigrant party. There is no reason why that niche should disappears even if you exit the EU.
