Yeah, ditto. Cleverly wrought or surprising absurdity as a critique and/or expression of dissatisfaction with a given status quo is my abstractly conceptual dude. The bit with all the rampant pejoratives sorta turns me off, but I still appreciate some good tongue-in-cheek absurdity.

But seriously, is it so alien a concept to imagine that a calculator might experience some tiny glimmer of something like deterministic "decision-making" in some kind of pseudoconscious experience from moment to moment, despite it's inability to react to or store and recall those experiences meaningfully? Apart from our brain's obvious complexity and ability to do those things which a calculator does not seem to be able to do, I have trouble seeing how an electronic circuit is any different than a biochemical one, nor why one experiences while another doesn't.

If it's a continuity of memory that creates the self, my grandfather has been living as a dead man for several years. But (and inb4 Descartes) there's certainly a person in there, who talks to and reacts to the things he feels, can remember temporarily, and senses. If not memory, then what?

You could argue that the dickbutt is art and that it, despite being copied from another original source, indicates that you are a sentient being. I would argue that if the janitor wipes your memories and accrued personality because of the dickbutt, that would not be a nice thing to do.

And I would be sympathetic to the argument for dickbutt as art.  But art and sentience are very separate arguments.  If something is a stunningly beautiful piece of art we might value it as art.  That doesn't mean destroying it is the same as killing the artist.

To be fair, we do learn a lot about Roman culture that was never otherwise preserved from their "dickbutts", left behind on Pompeii or other ruins. Something potentially valuable is destroyed when a dickbutt is erased, it's just that we prioritize the right of the merchant who owns the property defaced by vandalism to maintain a presentable property rather than the right of the artist to her "tag".

In the sense that Tay represents a history of an uncontrolled crowdsourced interaction with a learning algorithm and the societal response to it, including the raising of questions about AI sentience and rights (however spurious), those things would also be potentially valuable.

Of course, we don't have to recognize Tay as historically significant if we don't consider it sufficiently sanitized for passing down to future generations. The damage potential of recognizing a racist AI might not be worth it.

Yeah, but there will always be more dickbutts.  Pompeii is of interest to us because we dont have many dickbutts of the Romans so it gives us a rare insight.  It's a matter of scarcity, the first Roman dickbutt is invaluable, the millionth not so much.

Tay's politically offensive crap doesn't give us anything special.  The human chatbots on 4chan are shovelling that shit out the door 24 hours a day.  There are tons of chatbots out there.  Sure all art is unique in some way or another.  But the internet doesn't get up in arms everytime someone throws away the notebook they wrote horrible teenage poetry in.  So that is why I say yes she is art, just not very interesting art.  I dont think they were up in arms because they thought Tay had a lot of artistic merit.
