Pre-honeymoon suites
« on: March 24, 2016, 07:14:40 pm »

I've never used a pre-honeymoon suite because I've never needed to.  In my current fort the mountainhome seems to be dead or dying.  My expedition leader became king on the first day of spring in the second year.  For the minor role-play effect, I'm assuming this means my migrants are actually refugees.  Problem is, none of them have any ties to anything other than deities. (I guess they're called void-dwarves?)

If I'm going to restore dwarven civilization to glory, I need babies.  So, the question, do pre-honeymoon suites still work like they used to?  Will locking a couple in a two-space bedroom and small dining room with enough food and booze to last a year work?  Or will they go crazy from unmet needs?

Any help or advice is appreciated.

That's actually a good question to !SCIENCE! in the latest version.  The introduction of Temples & Libraries has completely overturned previous information on Dorf needs.  If one of your chosen partners is super interested in books or praying, they could definitely turn bonkers in a traditional honeymoon suite.

I've had this work twice out of the 5 times I attempted it. Set up was a four tile meeting area over a bed, a table, a chair, and a quantum food/drink stockpile. I actually put 4 dwarves in at one time, though that may not be ideal. I also surrounded the area with masterwork doors in hope of additional happy thoughts.

The king took a lover during the first year before being crowned.  The lover became the new expedition leader - go figure.  I'm thinking they are great candidates for my first experiment.

I'm thinking a 2x5 room - 2 beds, 2 tables, 2chairs, 2 food stockpile and 2 drink stockpile.  Make a 2x2 temple over the stockpile.  Borough both of them in the room with absolutely no labors assigned and see what happens.  As a borough, other dwarves can continue to fill the stockpiles for as long as needed.  And a 2x2 temple should at least keep their prayer need met.

Any thoughts?

I've actually done a fair bit of this with 0.42.X (turned a dead civ from 17 void dwarves into a 140+ metropolis over 70+ years).

- The candidates have to be within 10 years of age.
- Both candidates have to be willing to marry the opposite sex. DFHack's gaydar or gui/gm-editor status/current soul/orientation flags can show this (DT doesn't provide sufficient info).
- The candidates should not find love abhorrent or have a hard time to fall in love.
- At least one candidate has to have some prior knowledge of the other (relations are not symmetric, so one can be a Friend of another who doesn't even recognize the beard of the other). Obviously they shouldn't hold a grudge against each other (I haven't tried that though).

- Prepare a room with:
  - A cooked meal stockpile.
  - A booze stockpile (this one has to be at least two tiles, as you get an empty barrel in one of the tiles).
  - Two beds assigned to each of the candidates (and remove any other beds allocated to them, if any).
  - A door that can be locked.
  - I prefer a table and a chair, but that's not necessary.
  - Set up a burrow in the room. It's a pain to actually get them there, as the new needs jobs are buggy in that they can go to the burrow, eat, and then desert it to pray or whatever. Note that they won't desert if they've realized they're supposed to be burrowed (gui/gm-editor shows mill burrow).
  - Set up a tavern zone in the room. A dropped cup is nice as well.
  - Wait until they get there, and then lock them in when nobody else is there, to keep them undisturbed.
  - Check back once in a while to ensure they aren't thirsty or hungry.
  - Socializing like this should eventually get them to marry (within a year in all my successful cases).
  - When married, remove the tavern zone to get them to be together without any jobs, which should eventually result in a pregnancy (gui/gm-editor relations shows if the female is pregnant).
  - Release, remove the bedroom designations, assign a new shared bedroom for the couple.
  - Take a new candidate pair in, possibly after restocking the food and booze stocks.
  - Prepare the couple's bedroom in the same way, but without a tavern zone. When a baby has been produced, they can then be burrowed there to encourage the production of further offspring.

- I've tried to have a temple as well, but that didn't seem to do much good, mostly taking time from socializing.
- Otherwise good couple candidates that didn't recognize each other beards (why should you be expected to recognize the 20 dorfs you grew up with, let alone other pesky kids?) were total failures. Socializing in isolation for a year didn't get them to recognize each other (I think I made 3 attempts). I have no idea of how to get past that initial step, other than just let time pass and hope they start to get at least the lowest level of relation.

Success!   The king and (new) queen married within a month of being burrowed together.  My set-up is exactly as described, except I didn't bother with a temple (I felt I could add it any time if their needs were dropping).  So,

fbctd - food, beds, chairs, tables, drinks
fbctd

I turned off all their labors and burrowed them in the 2x5 room.  They showed up to the burrow within a day.  I didn't lock the door as my other dwarves hadn't brought in the food yet.  They were already lovers, so I'm sure the process was greatly accelerated.  Still, in the (I guess) three years I've been playing DF, I've never had a marriage.

Somewhat ironically, two of my migrant void-dwarves showed up married.  No other connections to anyone or anything.   That's 51 migrants to this fort, and they're the first pair to have any relations of any sort (other than worship).  I think they did it just to rob the king of being the first married dwarf in the fort.

Congratulations!

Void dwarves sometimes bring children as well. Usually they're a couple with a child, but I've had single parents with no relation to a spouse. I haven't investigated if these single parents are eligible for marriage, though.
