Update 7: Executive Meddling (of the Senate)

Tientsin throws a fit and its mandarin goes missing. He probably got killed by angry peasants. He will be missed.

One Colliseum later and all is well.

Indians demanded Gunpowder, and I rejected. They didn't wage war so I placated them with secrets of Navigation and Engineering instead.

Two turns later, Greeks and Indians declared war at each other.

I was tempted for 0.297 seconds. But they didn't throw any money into it so I politely declined.

Hmmm. That was fast, and Vikings gave our neighbours some useful techs (nothing of concern though).

Many turns of lull in anything interesting, suddenly Indian legions step up to our settlers south of Shanghai. They demanded Gunpowder, I refused, and they declared war. Our musketeers dealt with initial two Legions.

Shanghai began training Musketeers while Anyang is assembling Cannons. We will capture Lahore and then encroach upon the heart of Indian territory which is currently dealing with crusader raids.

Oh come on!

This happens just after we capture Lahore. SENATE WE HAVE BEEN OVER THIS ALREADY!!

A three-Crusader landing almost had captured Tatung if not for the bravery of the Musketeer garrison that somehow repelled them with tiny amount of survivors. Phew. This reminded me to make the standard 'two unit garrison' in our core cities.

And I decided to show Indians that they're not the only ones with heaps of money; this is our captured Legion, people!
PS: It was later disbanded in Anyang to speed up creation of another Cannon unit.

Gandhi refuses to be incited into open war by not getting angry at our repeated refusals of giving him Gunpowder. Tsk.

Soon we will be a superpower though. Darvin's Voyage, once completed, grants you TWO free technologies. And Railroads boost both Trade and Shield production of a tile they're built on, and units moving on railroads do not lose Movement (this can have grave consequences if you get invaded, though).

Turn later... the cease fire ended! Now we can- SSSEEEEEEENAAAAAAATE!!! I couldn't declare formal war because they overrule me each time. Gaaah!

Ha! THIS time they won't get away so easily!

Ahahah! Now the cash will flow! Adam Smith's Company pays for each City Improvement that costs 1 coin. Usually this means that your income is effectively getting a boost between 15~30%!

The city of Bombay falls into our hands after our Cannons and Knights blast through 6 units stationed there, mostly warriors and legions. This is only the first step-

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Another Wonder under our glorious Chinese coat. And then another - Michelangelo's Chapel! The first one though paves way for my little exploration project...

...it's time for us to visit the land of enigmatic Aztecs, builders of galleys that recently began to visit our coasts suprisingly frequently! This mighty Ironclad shall be our explorer!

But more on that in next update.

The Tientsin mandarin, currently still hiding in his palace's cellar send a note to the Chengdu mandarin stating 'I told you so!'.

Update 8: Death of the Republic

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Suprisingly fast the Ironclad reaches the shores of other continent! No Aztec city in sight, and our ship was sent southwards. If Aztecs sent ships, they gotta have a port somewhere.

A-ha, we finished the Explosives research and our Settlers are now Engineers, who work twice as fast.

Our Ironclad found the Aztecs; and our Explorer found the Greeks (Alexander took this opportunity to declare war on us).

Our explorer is set upon an army of Crusaders of the peoples we only heard tales about - Vikings!

They begun with demand for Gunpowder. We politely reject, but hoping that-

Welp.

The Indians break the cease fire! We have the reason to attack them.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This will soon be ours.

PS: With Sanitation's secrets discovered few turns earlier, our Chinese cities will soon boom with population!

Sweet. Factories increase Shield production by 50%. With a railroad network in the works, we-

...

.  .  .

We no longer have a Senate.

But at least we have a Queen.

And she demands blood.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Indians are on brink of being incorporated into glorious Chinese Kingdom, with one city of Karachi outside our sights yet. Must be somewhere down the peninsula.

With Greeks and Vikings alternating between alliance and mutual war, and Aztecs sitting tight on their private continent, the stage is set for Chinese domination sciency quest to space!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And here the Queen's plans for future settlements with irrigation network expansions too and locations of particular resources they gonna have. Then I believe we will be content with amount of territory and cities we have, and we will get our borders closed and leave every other civilization behind. May they wallow in their own mud.

The vikings and greeks are still at war with us, yes, and the Indians still exist? Perhaps we should dedicate three or so cities to WAR (or at least scouting), while the rest do PEACE stuff?

Update 9: No India No More~

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Despite our best efforts the war continues; Vikings and Greeks began to continuously help Indians with units, pricking our side with stream of Crusaders, and also technologies, allowing Gandhi to finally develop his own Gunpowder.

Fortunately we are done with Darwin's Voyage; it sped up research on Magnetism (which gave us hillariously obsolete ships by now), and I've choosen Leadership so as you can see, our horse units were beefed up into Dragoons. With 2HP, they can soak up much more damage than any previous mounted unit.

Yes, finally! Our mighty Dragoons captured Indian capital after a lenghty war. I've checked with the embassy; Karachi and Bangalore are the only cities left.

Our research on Theory of Gravity was completed and that unlocked another of my modded units; the Balloon. It works like Helicopter; has infinite fuel and just loses tiny bit of HP each turn outside a city, but won't perish from that. Perfect, unrestricted scout.

Soon.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Very soon.

Or maybe the Vikings disagree? Their forces snuck upon Nanking, but do not worry, we will deal with them.
PS: And we did; 2 Catapults, 3 Crusaders and a Dragoon in total were defeated.

And it's done. Indian cities are all ours. The destruction of Indian civilization prompted Alexander to withdraw his Crusaders that were glaring at us from hills and plains north of Karachi.

Turn later, Beijing constructs Shakespeare's Theatre while Aztecs build Eiffel Tower... wait. You need Steam Engine for that, where did they get it from? Maybe we're not the only smart people on this planet...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This update ends here, have a map of Greek coasts that our Balloons have explored.
Note to self: Reinforce Karachi border irrigations.

Update 10: Aztec Goodwill&Knife

As noted by one of ministers of the Chinese court, it might be that Aztecs have powerful empire spanning two continents. A Balloon was rushed in the city of Kyoto with the goal of exploration of Aztec inlands.

Especially that two turns later Aztec Ironclad (unsuccessfully) bombarded Tientsin!

Five turns later they land near Tientsin!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Hello there, enigmatic raiders from the east.

Sure! If that stops you from bombarding Tientsin so often.

Ooooh. This is a tempting offer... Democracy is beefed up Republic, the Senate might be more inclined to warfare, plus the boost of luxuries, trade and science is even higher than republic; plus there's just tiny amount of Corruption and Waste compared to Republic.

The Queen accepted and told the mandarins to leave their wine cellars.

That renders our Balloon expedition obsolete!

And thanks to President Wu Zetian, we are now back on the track of science train! Let's see Aztec map-

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Oh damn, they sure did expand a bit on that private continent of theirs. I mean they're just behind us in terms of improvements, but their empire is smaller. They did a lot of sea traveling as you can see by the explored minimap in upper right corner.

They will be either our (distant) neighbours or competitors in the race for space.

We will see sometime in the future I gu-

D:<

Honestly?? I mean all they did was lose buncha Catapults and Frigates against Tientsin (what's with them converging on it anyways?), but still, this is aggravating! At least Vikings and Greeks are perpetually against us, not stabbing us in the back the moment we sign peace!

Bah!

Fortunately they do not bother us again and in meanwhile we research Electronics. This improves the effect of Colliseums but also gives us designs for Hoover Dam; it provides Hydro Plant in every city we own; it's the cleanest form of Factory upgrade short of Solar Plant.
PS: Next turn we finish Newton's College in Nanking.

Alas, with all our industrialization and huge population, the cities began to produce Pollution. To those unfamiliar, Pollution lowers Trade and Food output of a tile. Also, sufficient amount of Pollution can escalate the global warming, leading to potentially disasterous consequences. At this moment our technology has nothing that can diminish this; we can only put Hoover Dam online to minimize the pollution creation a bit.

Speaking of which, we got it up! Clean, reliable Hydro power now boosts every Chinese city (with Factory) with +50% Shields production!

And we develop Conscription; our Musketeers now got boosts in attack and defence, making them doorstoppers for anything that is not a Cannon or Cavalry.

...

Many turns pass and it's now 1720AD. Nothing exciting happens. No Aztec landings, no Viking crusades, and only Greeks keep us company by sending Catapults and Crusaders at us.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So here, have a map of Great China in that year. I had to un-zoom quite a bit (it stops rendering tile improvements at this level) to fit every Chinese city in. From Karachi in Persia to Kaifeng at edges of Siberia, Chinese culture flourishes.

Update 11: The Chinese Scientific Behemoth (and the Sad Tale of Don Quixote the Barbarian)

The very next turn, our wise men discover the principles of Theology; it allows for construction of yet another wonder, J.S.Bach's Cathedral, which make 2 unhappy people on your continent content.

We also have a little peasant uprising on our hands, but nothing our riflemen can't handle.

The shields-poor cities like Macao or the ones on Japan archipelago will soon get a tremendous boost in their production output.

We are ahead of everyone else. If we get Mass Production soon, then coupled with Miniaturization they will allow creation of Computers, and with them SETI Project, which will boost our total science output by 25%.

The Chinese people can now claim to be enlightened both scientifically and spiritually.

You can see how important Mass Production is; it unlocks so many technologies! It also allows construction of Mass Transit, which is the only way to curb pollution you get from huge cities.

First airplanes can be constructed. Next is Radio, then Advanced Flight, then Rocketry... and then Space Flight (we will still need Plastics and Superconductor for 2 out of 3 required Spaceship parts).

Huuuh?? And how did these get here? I have 4 Submarines on sentry mode eastwards from Japan.

SAY WHAT. Are they out of their mind??
We killed the 'invading' Musketeers. I need more submarines.
PS: Later I noticed that they go all the way from below, pass Indonesia and then sail up the coast, sneaky bastards.

Also lately we have been getting an awful lot of pollution, even with Hoover's Dam and Mass Transits some cities continue to get some pollution counters. I wonder if we should get Recycling tech.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

OUR SUBMARINE NETWORK NEEDS TO BE LARGER! A transport slipped past it.
We gonna blanket the entire Pacific with subs if need be. At least one other sub struck down a barbarian galleon, sinking it and 4 other units it was carrying.
PS: By the end of this update, our Submarine fleet was enlarged to 14

Ahahahaha!

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

China will very soon be into fusion reactor-powered deathbots.

And now for something totally different:

See this little barbarian knight? He tanked 2 Elephants, a Crusader, and next turn he went out to kill a stack of 3 Cannons. Mad respect for the Don Quixote there!
PS: He miraculously survived an attack by a sneaky Cannon!
PPS: Few turns later though he died to acute case of Musketeers. RIP Don Quixote, the Chinese people will forever remember you in epic tales of badassery.

It's time for a Cosmodrome to be built in Beijing, don't you think?

Perhaps it'd be better to post a few subs near Texcoco and watch the Aztec movements there, and if they ship off a transport from there you have more time to intercept it in open ocean before it lands on your shores. Texcoco also serves as the panama canal too and appears to be there only western port and 1 of only 2 port cities in total.

Agrees with the above. You're obviously well above warlord difficulty. I'd say go all the way to deity and attempt to tackle that, and if you lose a few times, well remember the old losing is fun mantra of b12 and try again with some slightly adjusted tactics to hopefully fix where you went wrong before.

That and I think china has one of the best starting positions in the game. You may consider a weaker starting civ if you do earth again.

Hehe, well yanno facing your fears head on can help you get over them. Also you get like 2 or 3 free palace upgrades for simply playing on deity and another 2 for raging hordes barbs if I recall. Think of how sweet your palace will be. xP
