The rarest materials known to dwarf
« on: December 13, 2007, 01:08:00 pm »

Pelagic clay
Siliceous ooze
Calcareous ooze

I want them. Seriously, I want them more than Adamantine. How does one obtain them from the bottom of the flipping ocean? As far as I know, there are no tiny islands to start on. Is anyone thinking of modding them in near the shore?

My DF experience won't be complete until I have carved out a fortress in ooze with the ocean above it.

Can't you start out on an island map with a significant amount of ocean, and then dig down?

Ooze does not appear as you get closer to the shore. The only thing that could possibly work is a tiny island in the middle of the ocean, which does not have a significant shoreline, but I don't think the world generator makes islands smaller than the local area square.

I've experimented with various ocean squares, and it doesn't seem like there's any way to do it.

The only thing I haven't done, which I may do, is use memory editing to just start in the middle of the ocean and make my dwarves aquadwarves so they don't drown.

Do these oozes even drop rocks when mined?  I assumed they were like soil.

Yes, they're probably soil. Which makes it even more amazing if you carve a watertight fortress inside them.

can you start in an ocean square if you mod dwarves to be amphibious? I expect it's hard coded where you can start, but it's worth a shot if you want it that bad - don't forget to make a new world.

otherwise, I don't think it's possible.

It's hardcoded.

Alas, the most I can achieve is this sort of shabby modding:

So, you can start on top of a goblin citadel, on top of a magma vent, in the middle of a river, in the worst monster gathering you've ever seen, and in the middle of a glacier, but you can't start in the ocean.  Bugger.

I think it would be pretty awesome to have a swimming race, build your fort on the sea floor or on a reef, and then hunt for mollusks or whatnot in the gentle undersea currents.  Don't forget to farm some seaweed!

Ive done so already...or tried to.  Can't make most constructions underwater and just like a flying fortress race their brains seem to turn off the moment they get underwater.  Certainly is something I would want to see work in the future though.

Very sorry to raise a zombie thread, but I've found a map that has calcareous ooze, siecious ooze and pelagic clay all in the same map! I don't know if this is just now possible or what.

version: 0.27.176.38a

seed: 2303250742

Location: There is a volcano island in the large ocean in the northeast of the map. on the west side, there is a visible lava vent, if you extend the embark area all the way to the left end of the map the edge has all 3 of those available (and is very, very deep).

Sorry if this is old news.

Edit: and the map might be bugged anyway (go figure) - http://www.bay12games.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=6&t=002960

There should definitely be underwater races, and they should be able to mate with regular dwarves, producing hybrids that bring you things, and you give the surface people rare white gold.

He's right is is there. I'm starting a fort now. It should be interesting since Siciceous ooze is an aquifier and I have to get through 2 layers of it.

25th of malachite we struck pelagic clay.

Interesting, pelegic clay isn't usable as a soil. I can't plant crops on it. It shows up as a soil in the embark screen but it is dropping stone and I can't farm on it.

Think alike we do Muffles. Of course my monstrous crab people may find it necessary to trade with these fishmen (carpmen) to gain 'willing' to incubate their wriggling tadpoles within their meaty bodies. Of course I wonder what kind of Hidden Fun Stuff should hide below the waves: Tekeli-li! Tekeli-li!
