newbie question... butchering dead animals
« on: April 14, 2007, 03:03:00 pm »

Is there some way to get the guys to carry dead animals inside so my butcher can do his job? Ive been having to erect butcher shops out in the fields in order to get any meat...

is that how youre supposed to do it?

am i supposed to set up some special storage slots at the butcher shop or something??

There are two methods of getting around this business.

The first is tedious, but allows you to put butchery's wherever you want. Queue up a bunch of butcher animal jobs via manager screen or set 10 of them on repeat. If there's animals coming in at a respectable rate, then this works well! However, if you ever get a gap, expect a bunch of cancellations and having to set the jobs back up again.

The second takes advantage of the butcher's "get a job" radius. There's a certain limit of about 30 spaces in a 'circle' around the workshop that if a corpse is dropped in that range it will automatically pop up a job to butcher a corpse. What you do is build butcheries fairly close to the entrance of your fort, near your outside refuse stockpile. That way corpses brought in by your hunters are guaranteed to be in that range and you will not have to micromanage it.

Butchers automatically task jobs when there are corpses in refuse piles, located anywhere.  You can also stick a refuse pile underneath the corpse in question, and that should help.

Of course, if the corpse in question is far away from the butcher shop, you'll run into problems with your dwarves getting hungry halfway through and canceling.
