Duno if it's necessarily hated, but I recall the Gamespot review gave it something like a 4 out of 10.

Gangsters: Organized Crime, somewhat broken game now, for whatever reason, and I can't play it without getting a virtual machine and stealing re-installing an older copy of Windows, but god damn that game is fun. No other crime sandbox game like it :(

Also, re:ME3ISBEST: no :P ME2 is best, mostly because it fixes the problems from ME1. Mostly. ME3 just rehashes part of the ME1 story, and unsubtly tugs on the emotional bonds you made of almost every other character that was in a previous game. None of the games are particularly fantastic, though...

But that's just, like, my opinion, man.

I never thought Undertale was trying to be Earthbound. There's influences, sure, but it's mainly it's own thing.

Toby Fox never said so AFAIK, but almost every review and let's-play seemed to mention Earthbound in the first few minutes.

Anyway, my own answer to the OP would be Five Night's at Freddy's. I genuinely thought it was scary and a fun, original idea. Much like the Blair Witch Project, it seemed like one of those things that was initially popular, but then everybody was too cool for it. I wasn't a fan of how it (d)evolved into DEEPEST LORE for the sequels, though.

Right? Everybody seemed to really love it and then really hate it overnight. For the story's sake I feel like it should have stopped at 2.

3 was quite weak, but 4 was interesting.

Not that I ever played them myself. Watching Markiplier play them is enough.

Oh yes, ME2 fixed so many problems of ME1. Like it having a coherent world and plot! GONE. Or having one-off characters with more then two lines of dialogue! GONE. Or how Shepard was a big deal because of what he knew instead of how good he was at murder! GONE.

Speaking of Oblivion hate, anyone else notice a trend for basically all bethesda-style RPG's where

a) on release, they are awesome. best thing since canned bread, or whatever
b) two months later, they really, really suck and why even bother
c) about a year later, they're completely awesome again, or at least upgraded to decent
d) new bethgame is out, the last one is suddenly much better than the new one, because reasons and stuff.

I can honestly say I find them all kinda formulaic (but it's not a bad formula!), with pretty decent combat and probably one or two interesting character mechanics, buried under sub-par writing and hit or miss world design. I play almost all of them the same way: bog-standard ranged stealth, then replay a few times over a month or two and then put it aside forever.

The sole exception was New Vegas, which I played the shit out of to the point that my pitiful little brain is saturated with it and I can't play it anymore for knowing almost everything inside and out. And that wasn't even really Bethesda so...

On thread topic, I can't decide if people really "hate" them or not, it's confusing.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

Oblivion. But, save your giggles for later - I think I will release a paper or some such on the subject one day, since the ridiculous amount of hate this game received goes actually way beyond the videogame field and gets a bit meta. The mental gymnastics used in the process are quite interesting.

I liked oblivion too  8)

In the same spirit - skyrim.... without mods. Everyone seems to think it's a shit-tier game that's only worth playing after you've added 10000 lore-breaking (not that TES lore is particularly coherent or anything) random mods that turn it into an animu paradise with bikini armor, overpowered 1-shot everything weapons, and thomas the tank engine dragons.... but I'm replaying it with only one mod (expert level versions of the starting sparks/frostbite/flames spell) and it's still very enjoyable. While I'm finally starting to get bored of it, that's only after over 120 hours on the same character. It's entertained me longer than the overwhelming majority of games I've bought, anyway.

See, I would read that, but none of the Mass Effect games are really... good, I s'pose. I wouldn't go out of my way to play any of them again (I only played the first two multiple times 'cause I wanted some continuity with my character) so I don't feel like reading a long ass thing saying why the changes are good or bad :P I am happy to agree the first game was an RPG, and the other two are 3p cover-shooters, though.

I enjoyed the second one more than the first one. I only finished the third one 'cause I sank a lot of time into the first two. Mediocre games across the board!

I probably disliked Skyrim because I liked Oblivion so much. They weren't all that different except on a superficial level. Different places, different engine, different platform. Roughly exactly the same combat. My favorite part of Oblivion was jumping until I could jump REALLY HIGH, then jumping to weird places and shooting things with my bow.

And sure almost every popular PC game gets a massive injection of replayability post-release when all the dope mods roll out.

Many hours were wasted on this.

Lunar: Silver Star Story and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue, old games I played on the Playstation. RPG, similar in vein to Chrono Trigger, but what blew my mind back then... actual singing in muh game.  Music ain't bad either.

... So many old games that I simply do not have the patience/fortitude to play again cause of boring repetitive grinds / UI hell. ... Probably a plus for me, overall.

thomas the tank engine dragons

Blasphemy. All true TES players know the only dragons you need are played by Macho Man Randy Savage.

But I agree. I prefer to play the games "unmodded" once the fan patches come out.

THANK YOU :P
They all were balls :P 2 was slightly less balls!

I dropped all three games at some point during my first play through:

1 at Virmire

2 at... just before the collector ship?

3 after frickin' Mars

Oh yeah? Well I quit ME1 during the logo sequence, ME2 during the install, and with ME3 I just bought the box and threw it in the trash on the way out of the store.
