Games You Like That Other People Hate
« on: March 08, 2016, 08:50:13 am »

I love Lost Planet 2. The main criticism I hear is that it has bad controls. Never had any problems controlling that game. Hit stuns and recovery animations are just something you have to learn. If you're being hit you can't shoot, so... Don't get hit. I've S-ranked the campaign on Extreme back when I still played my Xbox 360 and I intend to get it again on Steam (as soon as they fix it for Win10) and LP it to prove why it's a good game.

Somehow people think the first game is better. Why? LP2 is LP1 but with a different story (better or worse I can't say; LP2's story was okay I guess and I haven't played LP1's left little enough impression that I don't remember most of it) and way more levels, weapons, and vehicles.

Not sure if right place or should be put in other games but eh.

Sanctum 2. Granted the game is more first person shootery and there are caps everywhere and little ways to kill bulky enemies after a few rounds but its surprisingly fun for me.

Spore. It's an overhyped mess of features and gameplay types that never quite feel in sync with each other, but dammit, it's unique. I had a lot of fun with it despite all the flaws. It's a shame we never got a sequel that could really do the concept justice.

Bioshock Infinite. Sure, the gameplay is simplified and the story isn't all it could be. But the skyhook is so much fun and Booker and Elizabeth have such a great relationship. Plus, it's a beautiful game.

Thea: The Awakening. Yes the grind can get a bit boring in mid game and the late game can just become a complete kill fest of everything, even on higher difficulties, its still a fun game that if they can flesh things out further could actually get a bigger player base.

X:Rebirth. It got widely panned when it was first released due to the massive amounts of bugs and the fact that you couldn't change ships, but a thousand patches later and 2 expansion packs, and it's become one of my most played singleplayer games.

Ah yes, the insatiable lust of corn and rice, clearly two of the most erotic foods.

I've mentioned it before, and it's maybe a bit into "so bad it's good" territory, but there's an Xbox360 game called "Operation Darkness" that is just too ridiculous to not love at least a little bit unironically.

It's a tactical RPG set in WWII with supernatural elements. It's a game where you can transform into a werewolf wielding a bazooka and use it to blow up enemy tanks and nazi vampires (werewolf bazooka is stronger than human-form bazooka of course). It's a game where you can use white-haired pretty boy Jack the Ripper to shank skeletons from 5 squares away. Shoot fireballs at snipers. Try to assassinate Hitler (spoilers: He is magic.) It does all this while doing its best at playing the story dead straight with serious drama and lots of very british voice acting.

It was apparently pretty much panned due to terrible graphics and an overall veneer of shittiness, and actually playing it is, admittedly, a bit of a slog, but it's still one of the best $9.99s ever jokingly spent for me by a friend.

Also your medic is named Herbert East. :P

Welp.

There's this one pc game called Silver, made by the now dead Infogrames, that I just love to bits. Apparently it wasn't super succesful when it was released for some reason or another (prob because it was kinda buggy) so basically nobody knows about it today, but to me its truly a hidden gem. Its an action RPG thing that, despite having a really generic plot (wizurd has kidnapped ur sexy wife bcuz reasons, hur hur), had this really interesting fighting system in which you had to do certain mouse movements to perform a certain type of attack, for example, pressing the right mouse button, moving the cursor upward and releasing it would cause your character to perform a lunge, etc. While the character models consisted of a bunch of polygons that would make final fantasy 7 character sprites look detailed by comparison, all the environments consisted of animated pre-rendered that just looked beautiful as all hell (at the time).

I'm still searching for a copy of it to this day, but even then I'd have to somehow get it working on windows 8 ;~;

A more recent one is Wakfu, the only tactical MMORPG in the vein of Final Fantasy Tactics I've ever seen (apart from dofus, which is made by the same company). I keep trying to go back to it, specially now they completely revamped the way character statistics work, added a new class and reworked the class of my highest level character. However, I have nobody to play it with. Literally everyone from bay12 that played it left, and this is the kind of game you should enjoy with other people. Its not that people hate it, it just... Doesn't seem very attractive to most people I guess.

There's also Messiah, which was this really weird third person action shooter thing made by monolith (i think) with a possession gimmick. Essentialy, you're a derpy angel sent by God to save a super cyberpunk earth from Satan, and the main way to achieve this is by possessing people along the way and make use of their special abilities. Its a really neat concept I enjoyed a lot and that I wish some other  games would've used as well, but I never ever found any game that did it in the same way that Messiah did. Buggy and dated as all hell, but I kinda enjoyed it. It was basically unfinished when it was released, so its no wonder people didn't like it.

Here you go.
I remember being incredibly frustrated by the gameplay at the time (got stuck fighting an incubus, IIRC). Then again, my (leopard, mouse) coordination wasn't exactly up to scratch... Maybe I'll give it another try sometime ^^

I LOVED Wolfenstein 2009, but most people didn't like it for some reason.  I think people don't appreciate killing Nazi Wizards and stealing Nazi gold as much as I do.   :P

I honestly quite like both Blake stone: Aliens of gold and it's sequel, as well as Corridor 7. The former for some reason seems to get knocked for being so similar to wolfenstein when... Honestly it's just an improvement on everything all the time. And well I can't tell you why I really like Corridor 7 besides the fact that I do genuinely like it non ironically.

Uncharted Waters Online. Somehow I'm the only bay12 person who manages to cling to this outdated, grindy, mostly pay-to-be-elite MMORPG set in Age of Sail. Everyone else runs away after few days tops. It makes me sad.
