Harvest Moon - Friends of Mineral Town questions

My biggest question at the moment, is what exactly can I do to stay productive after my modest crop is watered?

My related question, how the heck do I obtain a fishing rod?

Another question, is there a good reason to buy that pricey medicine? Or food for that matter?

Food (Best to make it yourself later on) restores fatigue and the Medicine restores health.

Also as for productivity, foraging, mining, fishing tend towards being useful, either that or speaking to all the villagers per day to make friends.
