Items stuck off map

Well, the caravans haven't shown up for a while but I still got the message they had arrived.
At first I didn't pay attention because I didn't need to trade anymore. But when I checked my stockpile menu I found some "red" items. Trying to locate the items showed somewhere the caravans enter the map but I couldn't actually see the items.

I've seen others reporting similar problems. It seems to be caused by the caravans bolting due to getting scared by something (caravans are as easily scared as horses), and dumping their things off map.
I haven't tried it in this case (since I haven't been in the situation), but if you're using DFHack you should be able to mark all the caravan stuff for dumping and then use the "autodump" command to teleport the stuff to the cursor. It's your call if you want to reclaim the items or unforbid, redump mark them, and then use autodump destroy-here (if I remember the command correctly).

Note though that red items are usually the ones you own but are locked up, for instance logs that are part of a building, or beds that have been placed. I don't know what happens if you try to teleport those (although I'd guess nothing. Come to think of it, I've probably marked some buildings when I've cleared and destroyed webs from caverns without any ill effect).

Yeah, haven't tried dfhack for 42.06 yet.
By the way, why did the caravans stop showing up? Only a few guards actually entered the map everytime I got the message.

dfhack for 06 seems fairly stable at the moment

There actually appear to be multiple bugs plaguing caravans with potentially unknown causes, including caravans claiming to have arrived but not appearing, or immediately departing/vanishing, or arriving in your depot - and not unpacking. Not all of them seem to be reported on Mantis yet, and their causes are not completely understood because they are new to the latest set of updates. May be related to events at your home fortress, like the mountainhome being conquered by gobbos.

I've encountered this issue myself as well. Get the message that the caravan arrived, in my case bypassing the depot I apparently didn't have, and never saw any caravan.

After a little while, I took down the trade depot, and rebuilt it, and it (the caravan) appeared at the corner of the map, everything working as usual.

Oh, and there was that one instance in which the wagon exploded when the caravan arrived. That one was amusing.

Well, it seemed that happened when I built a bridge over the edge of the map. The spot was where the goblins and the caravans usually entered the map from.
I don't know if they related, but I haven't seen a single goblin for 2 years.

Goblin1: Hey they built a giant atomsmasher on our way.
Goblin2: It is terrifying, let's turn back.
Goblin3: You are right, we should wait until they remove the bridge.
Troll: But we can jam the bridge or just walk around it.
Goblins: Shut up, you are not supposed to talk.

The merchants also got stuck off map, because I can see their clothes and armors in stockpile menu.
But I can't see them in the unit menu.

Further investigations showed that happened every time the caravans left.
DFhack's gm-editor showed their positions were all the same: x=-30000,y=-30000,z=-30000, but zooming to them (press z in stockpile menu) always took you to the spot where the caravans left your map.
They could be dumped and destroyed using autodump, for those who wonder how to get rid of them.

The bridge is not related by the way. I regularly suffer this bug without building one on the surface.

I like to think/roleplay about this bug that some highwaymen hit the caravan - or a part of it (survivors come, but don't unload and then leave after a month), but more probably this is a genuine bug.

Nah, they were not dead or missing. Only their items were not "recycled" properly.

The merchants and animals hit by that bug are not on the Dead/Missing list. The only clear evidence of their existence I see is on the engraver's list (*). And I'm not 100% sure that all of them are even here, because this list is surprisingly short for the amount of deaths I saw.


*) the circumstantial evidence is in the stocks list, the items they were carrying are red and point to the map edge
