FF games I played and/or enjoyed:

Tactics A2, cuz I ran that clan like a G. Owned all the turf, got the Sequencer early, I ran those streets.

FF 9, in terms of classic Final Fantasy gameplay, it's just a return to the fantasy we enjoyed in the earlier games and its legit.

FF 8, once you learn to either level up normally and learn to correctly junction the right spells, or not level up at all and card everything for AP and junction anyway.

FF 7, cuz it's a classic in pretty much all aspects except it didn't age so well, but still fun.

FF 12, I enjoyed those moments it felt like a single player MMO sometimes. Those adorable bunnies that heal the party were the best part, hands down.

Ah yes, the insatiable lust of corn and rice, clearly two of the most erotic foods.

Thanks everyone for the replies.
Wildly different lists, but almost everyone has 6 as one of the best.
Also, a lot of people like tactics. But it's playstation only? I don't have a playstation.

I think I'll get 6 and 7.

I really like 9 and 6 is a close second.

I kind of enjoyed 10 for its amazingly hammy and so-stupid-it's-fun story.

7 and 8  was kinda meh on. Personally I feel that Cyberpunk doesn't mix well with Final Fantasy. Though 7 was fun.

13 was for my tastes the worst of the lot. Dull characters, story that doesn't make a lick of sense and doesn't bother explaining itself at all (protip: dumping a bunch of weird phrases and expressions into the plot that mean nothing does not equal background storytelling)

There was a PSP rerelease of sorts called War of the Lions. I realize that's not any better if you don't have a PSP either, but still.

Tactics was in the era when Square and Nintendo were together.

FF6 is probably my favorite of the lot. Nostalgia helps, but it's got a straightforward plot that relies on character arcs instead of exposition to move the action, but at the same time has enough stuff under the surface to spend tons of time analyzing in detail. It also happens to have a pretty great fan update, but playing it will require piracy. If you do, I recommend buying the iOS version off Steam and then never playing it.

FF12 is a close second, but unavailable on Steam. The gameplay was meh at its best, but gameplay has never been main-sequence Final Fantasy's strong suit. Things like Tactics are definitely a different beast, but for these games story is king. FF12 has one of the best stories I've seen in any game, period, and fantastic voice acting to boot.

Beyond that, my opinions are quite wishy washy, and vary from time to time, so I'll just put my general ranking:
6 > 12 > 9 > 8 > 7 > Tactics Advance > 5 > 10 = 10-2* > 4 > 3 > 1

The rest I have either not played, or not played recently enough to remember anything about (Mystic Quest is a prime example of the latter).

*Yes, really.

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

I'd have gotten on with 12 a lot better if the main character didn't exist and was replaced by Balthier.

SE also really missed a trick by not making a game with Auron as the main character too IMO.

I guess I just want to play someone who's been around the block rather than a naive wonderchild.

It's true, but after Ashe joins the party she functionally becomes the main character and Vaan becomes practically a side character. It'd have been better to just start that way and leave him entirely out.

The very first game i own of the final fantasy franchise was Mystic Quest, wich was an off-serie spin-off i think? I cant tell as i was way too young to understand wtf i was doing hahaha. But those i loved was from 7-10 for different reason and a mention should go to the FF6 wich was the first open ended game i had before i took on secret of mana.

DF doesn't mold players into its image - DF merely selects those who were always ready for DF.

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

Mystic Quest were the original FF's.

Quite an impressive feat for something that came out five years after the first FF game.

I'm thinking of something else or just thinking of the releases outside Japan and how they're renamed?

I would have to guess that you may be thinking of something else.  Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest was a Western spin-off intended to serve as an introductory RPG for new players, and was designed accordingly.  The first Final Fantasy released in the US was the first mainline game Final Fantasy in 1990.  2, 3, and 5 were skipped, which meant 4 was renamed as 2 (US release 1991) and 6 as 3 (US release 1994).  Mystic Quest was intended to capitalize on the potential for success believed to exist after the release of 4/2 in 1991 and the three Final Fantasy Legend (which were also renamed to capitalize on the success of Final Fantasy 1, being the separate SaGa series in Japan) games.  Indeed, it was actually released first in the US due to being tailored for that market.
